I am encouraged by all the rumors kicking around on a soon to be released GSM Pre phone in Europe.

Is there any reason that I could not buy this phone without a contract and plug-in my AT&T SIM card? I assume the phone would be expensive w/o a contract, but I might be willing to buy on if it would work on my AT&T plan.

    Thoughts?

Assuming it is unlock able, assuming it supports US 3g bands and assuming you are willing to pay enough I think it could work.

i am sure people will be unlocking it in no time once the GSM becomes available. I may be interested when that happens.

    An old finding I had...

I'm leaning towards it WILL have 850/1900 HSDPA. It'll make life easier for Telefonica that way, and if the Telstra rumour is true.

    So it might work

Nobody knows at this point, but it's somewhat stupid to release a smartphone these days without at least quadband. It's just a waste of money to develop a high end device then give it the same radio as your grandma's prepaid phone, and then increase development costs to cover the other two bands for the rest of the world.

So my money is that it will work, at least the GPRS GSM part.

Do be careful. I suspect a sim swap will not be easy with the Pre because of the data.

In my first month with Pre I used 225mb of data and I am not a heavy user. Prior to that, with my unbranded, unlocked 680, I was using about 10mb on AT&T.

I suspect that kind of heavy usage will kick in a fee of some sort on AT&T, even on an unlimited plan. Just like they won't permit tether on the unlimited data plans.

I doubt the SIM has anything to do with data. As long as it's unlocked it'll work.

Well yes... the Pre is constantly connected and synching. Not to mention the speeds are completely different, EV-DO vs EDGE, AND what the Pre can do where the Treo can't. On my Centro I hit like 37MB out of my Fido 6GB data plan, but should prove sufficient for the Pre when it comes.

And I think the cap for the "unlimited" plan is like 5GB.

Worst case scenario, put a data block on the account. Sync only when connected to Wi-Fi and use the offline profiles.
