AT&T Not Ready to Roll Out MMS, Tethering for June iPhone Launch
    by Clayton Morris

If you're like me, you were left scratching your head today as to why AT&T balked at offering tethering and MMS on June 17 along with the release of iPhone OS 3.0.

And judging from the tone of Apple's keynote address at WWDC it was clear that they weren't happy with AT&T. One Apple executive told me today that AT&T wanted MMS to "die a slow death." Frankly, so did Apple, which hoped e-mail would be the answer to all of our picture messaging prayers.

It's no secret that MMS is an ugly protocol, so it is no surprise that the carriers would love to see it die.

AT&T Executive Director, Mark Siegel told me moments ago that AT&T does plan to bring MMS (multi-media messaging) to the iPhone, but not until the end of the summer.

"We're currently upgrading our systems and the overhaul won't be ready until the end of the summer," said Siegel, who emphatically assured me that it had NOTHING to do with their 3G network. He said the system they're upgrading is separate from the 3G network.

What about tethering? Is that tied to the same system upgrade?

"Yes," said Siegel. "But we don't have a date for when we will announce tethering, but it won't be at the end of the summer." I pressed him to give me a specific date but no such luck.

Did Apple throw AT&T under the bus by suddenly moving the launch date up to June instead of July?

"I'm not commenting on that," Siegel told me. I'll give AT&T credit for always being straight with me.

Since our phones can't tether either why is it being posted?? What does this have to do with the Pre either??

Well, if a thread doesn't interest you, you can simply ignore it. If you've turned on the news today, you would have seen that Apple is making a huge deal about tethering and MMS coming to the iPhone. I didn't know AT&T wasn't ready. However, the mods can definitely move this thread to a more appropriate area, considering it isn't exactly Pre-related.

Still relevant imo. Because, if the iPhone offers it, it will put pressure on the Sprint and the Pre to offer it.

AT&T got bashed all over for this. They deserve it for not being ready. Worldwide carriers are ready and AT&T makes the US look backwards again. Which unfortunately we are concerning cell phone technology, thanks to our carriers.
HP has officially ruined it's own platform and kicked webOS loyalists and early TouchPad adopters to the curb. You think after you drop it like a hot potato and mention it made no money and is costing you money, anyone else wants it??? Way to go HP!!

And some people are fools to keep believing their hype. HP has shown they will throw webOS under the bus and people are still having faith in them??? News flash: if it's own company won't stand behind it, it's finished!

Uses their own servers as opposed to email uses less of their network. Don't quote me on that.. Just a guess.

Centro wouldn't send pics unless through Sprints picture mail this forcing the other person to must have internet/mobile browser to see it.
