Is the Treo 650 with T-Mobile? I cannot find it on T-Mobile or Palm's website, BUT I went to this small cell phone store and the asian dude sold me a Treo 650 with T-Mobile. When I got it home I noticed it says Cingular on the front, but it works through T-Mobile and I have no problems.

    Is this weird?

Sorry, I don't know much about Treos.

It's not weird. T-Mobile doesn't carry the Treo 650; the store sold you a Cingular model that's been unlocked, meaning, it should now work with any carrier's SIM.

    So two questions:

    (1) Is that illegal? Not that I care too much.

    (2) Did I get the same good - rebate with service deal? I paid $250 for the Treo 650 with a one year agreement.

    Thanks!

It's perfectly legal - there's nothing shady about it at all.

Sounds OK to me. But realize that you can't expect any Treo 650 support from T-Mobile...although I imagine that you should be able to return it for a replacement if there turns out to be problem with that particular device.

T-Mobile relys on indirect sales heavyly. A lot of the "asian dude" stores sell regular unlocked phones for T-Mobile. I got a Sony Ericsson K700i from Chinatown when it first came out with a T-Mobile contract. I am using an unlocked 650 with T-Mo now.

Basically if you want hottest new phones (Sony w800 etc) you have to go to a T-Mo indirect store.

    Hi All,

I joined hoping to find just exactly this thread. Wow, Mipaul, $299 with a one year contract sounds like a great deal to me. You can't buy an unlocked Treo 650 for that on ebay and you have to sign up for at least a year contract when you go to T-Mobile anyway.

    Anyway!!! Please Someone Help!!!

I unlocked my new to me Treo 650 and put in my T-Mobile SIM and it connects to T-Mobile ok as a phone -- so far so good. Now how do I get rid of the Cingular opening and unlock Cingular's lock on the Favorite Buttons and whatever else that I haven't found yet that is locked to Cingular?

thanks ahead to anyone who can help me with this.

Search for threads on how to replace cingular firmware with unbranded firmware. A lot has been written about it.

Wait, it sounds illegal to sell a Cingular phone with T-Mobile service. Kinda bait-n-switch, right.
Unlocked Treo 650 (Nov 05) BTW: T-Zones sux!

Nothing illegal about it. The ability to change carriers is one of the great things about GSM phones. The whole issue with locked phones is the carriers attempt to stop customers from switching to a different carrier.

    Hi all,

PrioTreo - thank you so much. Yes that is exactly what I need to do. Now I just need to figure out a few things, for starters how to figure out the current versions. I am not in any way a techie unfortunately so mostly I just bumble around but I did manage to unlock this thing so I can follow directions.

Bill Gamble - thank you so much that will work to do exactly what I said I wanted, unlock the favorites buttons. Unfortunately as with most people who are not as knowledgable as they could be, what I said and what I really want are not quite the same. I really want to get rid of all the Cingular gunk, so the firmware and software upgrades or changes are really what I need. I sorta feal like I bought a computer with AOL previously installed and am now trying to figure out how to get it completely removed. I am still fumbling here but reading everything in hopes of finding my way.

Thanks for help and advice and any assistance anyone whats to give me. I am completely open to anything that I can learn before I tackle this project, which I really want to get done this week.

    Thanks again,
    Lee

    Hi Everyone,

I recently cancelled my all you can eat data package with T-Mobile because I don't feel like I use it enough to justify the cost. I've found the thread on how to setup T-Zone to get web access via Blazer but I don't beleive it's working properly.

I am unable to go to wap.voicestream.com as mentioned. Also, my network settings are locked by T-Mobile eventhough I now have a unbranded, unlock 650. Do anyone have any thoughts on how I can get into the settings?

    All suggestions are welcomed...thanks!

Several users reports varying successes on this.

I just think that there is a disconnect between what T-Mo's says you don't have access to versus what the technical support group says. These are two different groups that defines your access to T-Mo's network.

Eventually, when TMo's internal audit runs and validates the access versus their plan, some of the incorrect customer settings gets caught and is disabled. Fortunately, some consumers still retain access using T-Zones for one reason or the other.

I never had T-Mobile Internet (all you can eat). When I signed up for T-Zone via the web, it took about three days (including weekend) for it to start working. Give it a few days. It may start working.

ok forgive the newbie ..but how to T-Zones differ from t-mobiles internet access ? When I look at my account into online it only displays an option to add t-mobile internet. ...nothing about t-zones.

I believed they have repackaged TZones as T-MobileWeb.

Log in to your account > click the Communications Tools tab > hit the link on Learn about T-Mobile Web, then look for Getting started > hit the Add T-MobileWeb now link.

yup, just buy an unlocked/unbranded GSM Treo from Palm (or possibly now on e-bay, etc.), and sign up with T-Mobile.

No problems here with TMO. Support is as 'marginal' as it would be if they carried the Treo.

unlocked also lets you swap the SIM card with another carrier overseas - like O2.

Thanks you all for your input! I did notice something a little strange today. After cleaning up my VersaMail on my Treo sometime today I received a few pieces of mail. This is what I want to happen. However, if I try to "Get" the mail it fails. No sure why it happen but I think I'll continue to stick with the MobileWeb and save the extra money for now.
