Signal Strength - How Many Bars?

My Sprint Treo 600 never displays more than 4 bars.
Cingular promotes 5 bars in their marketing campaigns.
My Laptop wireless connection (Centrino) displays up to 5 bars.

Is the maximum number of bars a wireless industry standard or does it depend on the carrier and/or the device?

    Tks

    Reminds me of Spinal Tap,
    "Turn it up to 11"

Treos only go up to four bars... not five, not eleven! I get all for in a lot of places around DC now. Here at Bread and Chocolate across the street from Hoffman movie theatre in Alexandria, Va, I have four bars and decent GPRS speed. Waiting for Edge!

Tks for the info everyone. I guess I'll have to get out my "sharpie" as insertion suggested to get up to 5 bars.
