Good question. I liked that program for the 600.

FYI - I've received my first bill, and my data charge is only for the kb used before I set up the dial-up for my ISP. So, in my case I do have a pay-per-kb data plan, but the kb I use when connected via my dial-up ISP is only charged as minutes used.

It sounds to me like people are talking about two different plans (or lack of plans) here:

    1. Pay as you go, per kb.

    2. Pay for data out of your regular minutes.

I currently have a T600, and #2. I forget what it was called though, and you had to ask for it specifically when talking to a rep, or they often couldn't find it. Is this still the case? If so, what's it called?

i was in a verizon store today to purchase the treo 650. first they said that i needed a data plan to buy the phone. the sales person wouldnt sell it to me without adding a data plan, and i guess pay as you go wasnt an option.

then the salesperson tells me that the treo automatically connects to their 1x data network periodically, even if i dont initiat the connection. if i dont have a data plan my phone bill will be huge. how does it connect if i dont manually connect to the internet. if i dont use the internet, i shouldnt need a data plan, right?

last, i asked about the $100 off for the unlimited data plan, and they said that only applies to new customers. i have read that people buying the treo 650 full retail were given the $100 credit for signing up for the unlimited date package.

im confused...do i need a data plan, does the treo automatically connect, and can i get the $100 off for signing up for unlimited data package.

    thanks

The rep is mistaken (as is all too often the case).

They are talking about wireless sync, and if you don't explicitly take actions to set it up initially, it cannot and will not connect on its own.

I've read through this thread, and with all the different plans being discussed, I'm still slightly confused.

I have a Verizon phone now, and plan to get a 650 at the end of July with my NE2. Here's my question:

Will I be able to use data on minutes only, without an additional per Kb charge?

(I'm talking about using Verizon's network, not an outside ISP.) If so, how do I order it? Do I simply refuse any data plan whatsoever? Sorry to rehash, but I want to be sure, and some previous posts seemed a little ambiguous on this point. Thanks!

[edit] I just found this post on PDAphonehome which describes how to do this.

For 1xRTT, probably not. Now, when you tell Verizon that you don't want a data plan, they stick you on a plan that charges per kilobyte, rather than taking data out of plan minutes.

The thread you found shows how to connect to QNC (much much slower). If you're happy with 14.4 modem speeds, than you can set up to connect to QNC or a dial-up ISP. If you want faster (1xRTT) speeds, you will either need to get a data plan or pay per kilobyte.

I told verizon I wanted no data plan on my 650- no unlimited, no pay as you go, no nothin. I said I wanted my data to come out of my voice plan minutes. So far that is what seems to be happening- no increase in kilobytes on their web site. I am connecting using their preconfigured connection- presumably 1XRTT.
  9. #89
How long have you been checking their web site? Have you checedk data usage on the phone?
Note that Verizon only updates data usage every few days (usually more)
  10. #90
I last used data three days ago and still no kilobyte usage showing on the website, only minutes. I am waiting for my bill to be safe, but it looks like I have MOU.
  11. #91
it took 5-7 days to show last fall. not sure of current update rate.

I am definitely being billed only for minutes. I mistakenly left the Treo connected overnight (fortunately over the weekend) and found my minutes used had increased by 500! No KB data charges yet.

I was recently upgraded (compliments of VZW) to a 650 after my 3rd 600 died (all within 1 month). I had the MOU plan enabled on my T600 where data connect time was taken from my minutes. Apparently this was a somewhat antiquated plan (old National Access plan). Well, after the upgrade to the 650, I was unwittingly subscribed to a "pay as you go" data plan, and managed to rack up a pretty nasty bill, as I was operating on the MOU premise. So, incensed, I called VZW where they (the Data team) informed me that you MUST have a data plan for the treo 650. After considerable debate, I agreed and she transferred me to a "regular" (non data team) CSR to get this set up. Once she disconnected from the call, I told the CSR that I wanted to go back to my old plan where my data connection time was simply taken from my minutes. He warned me of the consequences, ie. remaining connected and scorching all of your monthly minutes, but I agreed that the risk was manageable. So, all told after a nearly 90 minute exchange I was put back on MOU with my new Treo 650. The CSR (who was awesome BTW) even went back and adjusted the current data charges and applied the data connection duration to my monthly minutes--effectively negating the data charge altogether.

    The take home messages:

    1. MOU does indeed still exist--but fight for it quickly, as it will likely be phased out (I managed to get a 2 yr contract).

    2. You DO NOT need to get the $45-$59 data plan from VZW in order to access the net.

    3. As far as connection speed goes, I regularly get 110+KB/s here in Rochester, NY. Works great for me, as I am a relatively "light" net user (email, DirAssist etc.). Not sure how this compares to the "pay" data plans, but I'm pretty happy.

    Good Luck!!

PabloTX is absolutely correct. I have had long, protracted arguments with Verizone Wireless and their clueless store reps and many online operators after I switched from my Samsung i600 to a Treo 600. The former used Verizon's old and very satisfactory network for Internet and I paid in 'using minutes of usage' out of my prepaid time. When I was switched to a Treo 600, I was not told that I would be placed on the "$45 per month unlimited" and I ended up with that on my bill. I complained, they took it off, I thought I'd get the old plan because I told the rep that the "the phone connects automatically so you need the new data plan" line is BS and supposedly they did. They put me on the kilobyte usage plan instead. I ended up with a $300 phone bill which was adjusted because of their self admitted nonsense.

I spent way too many hours on the phone with Verizon. All their reps have been told to say that you need the unlimited plan (suggested) or you can use the pay as you go because the phone connects at least once a day on its own. When I asked them then how come my minutes aren't used up if it connects 30 times a month on its own they all said... "uh.... uh...." It was ludicrous. Part of this is the reason why I got a free upgrade. The amount of time they put me through to fix certain items as I educated them, their supervisors, and half the people in their data department was ridiculous.

The one thing I believe -- there is someone in sales and marketing at Verizon (and most large companies) who is making up the marketing myths, training the employees to parrot them to tell consumers so as to sell consumers on things they don't need or want or expect so as to increase the overall sales numbers (which will net out easily exceeding the "adjustments.") It is just too coincidental that I hear SO many reports of the "well the Treos connect at least once daily on their own which is why you need the data plan or you'll end up having to pay if it connects and you don't prevent it..."

I ventured into a VZW store a month ago and asked if I could keep everything about my existing Treo600 plan and upgrade to the Treo650 and not have to change anything. I was told the only way to do this was to pay full retail for the VZW 650. Having some idea that the data was now being charged for outside of MOU I opted to pay full retail for the T650.

I called a couple of days later to ensure that nothing had changed on my plan. They assured me that nothing had changed and that I was still under my old plan. I then surfed a small amount and went on the VZW website to determine if I was being charged for data. Sure enough my plan HAD been changed to now include PAY-AS-YOU-GO-KB and I had a small set of data usage designated.

I called VZW again. Gave timeline of events, provided name of person I talked to at store, first CSR and even provided an e-mail that I had asked for from the first CSR that stated that nothing had changed on my plan. I was then ASSURED that I was on MOU and that while the system tracked data usage I would NOT be charged unless I went over my minutes, etc. Got this persons name, time called, etc.

July bill came out and sure enough I have data charges!

After reading this thread, I am convinced that despite what a CSR might tell you if you use the 1x data network you are GOING to get dinged for data charges. I further believe that even if you make adjustments and switch to QNC you will still be dinged for data charges.

I have sold my Treo600 or I would go back (although I really like the 650). I believe that in my case and in the case of others (people who were upgraded under warranty and not under the choice) that this is clear deceptive business practice. It makes no difference in the laws eyes as to whether their people don't understand what they are selling, they cannot arbitrarily sign you up for cost services that you can be held accountable without some form of signature or acceptance to these changes.

I feel a formal complaint to the government coming on over this whole matter.

I will give VZW another go, but I am relatively certain that this is going to require me to change my plan and the best I can hope for is some kind of discount in an attempt to make me as whole as I can be made as a result of nothing I have done wrong.

Wish you all the best of luck, but I must tell you that just because a CSR ASSURES you that you are on MOU doesn't mean a flipping thing as they don't understand all of these new arbitrary policies and programs either.

BTW: I don't believe that VZW can just kill QNC and MOU as those are the plans that they use for regular cell phones to allow them to use "Get it Now" and to surf the web. The fact is we are being discriminated against as a cohort who had the audacity to buy very expensive smartphones and so therefore can be expected to pay more for them.

    Cheers!

Go to the FCC site and file a complaint online. The phone companies take these seriously and there will be a followup.
(I had to do it when AT&T was playing games with my rates and bills. They were very attentive and fixed the problem after they recieved an official notice)

    Thanks Scottreo!

I just got off of the phone with Verizon in Round 3 of the discussion. They got the 'Data' guy 'Scott' on the phone who tried the same old line repeated here in this thread, "has to have a dataplan", "QNC not supported", "blah..blah..blah".

I ask how it is possible that the Treo600 could use data and not be charged.

    "Uhhhhhhhhh...."

I ask if I reconfigure the phone to use QNC would I not be charged.
"Uhhhhhh... let me check". "Uhhh... the 650 has to have a dataplan... you had to have been charged for using data on the 600".

No loser boy QNC isn't charged just as if I was on a regular VZW cellphone that was allowed to have web services. Do you actually know what plans and services your company offers? OK, I get it you are going to shaft me... so since I bought the 650 for full retail what are you going to now give me to upgrade to some plan that has data.

"Uhhhh... well we can 'upgrade' you to a merged plan for the same price you can get off the web. We can't do anything about the VZW store price because you bought it from them... you will have to go back there and get them to do something for you."

Wow, nice customer service. Can I have rentention?

"No. They can't do anything for you more than I am offerring."

Let me get this straight you are refusing to transfer me to retention and you are not offering anything more than I can get myself off the web?

    "uhhh... yeah I guess"

    OK, your name again is?

    "**click**"

LOL... well I guess I am off to escalate now and file a complaint with the FCC.

    Cheers!

Don't know if anyone is still following this thread but...

I also spent way too many hours today with the data plan. Just switched over from a Kyocera 7135 to the Treo, and found unexpected data charges on my bill this week. I know for a fact I was on 1XRTT on the Kyo, and I was charged by the minute, just as I had been promised by the rep that sold me the phone and plan. I think this company is full of S**t, and I believe they have changed my contract terms without my knowledge. I got them to remove the charges, but could not get them to get me back on MOU. I like the idea of calling the FCC, and will do so. Can I use this VZW 650 on any other network? I'd love to dump Verizon.

Just get a Verizonized one and that way you wil be able to use MOU. I am and so are 10 other friends of mine
