I'm picking up a treo today and wil use a separate dial up access. How can I prevent the constant pinging of the network. Will battery dr. prevent this? I want to prevent the high data bills some people have been receiving. Thanks

I am not sure what you are referring to but regardless if you are dialing up it would be impossible to ping the connection unless you have initiated it yourself. Dial up would not use the 1xrtt connection so you are not talking about an always on connection.
It is possible that you are talking about paying per kb for the 1xrtt connection, in that case you could set the phone to never auto connect and manually disconnect after your session.

My 2 cents is that you will not experience the device at its full potential unless you have a good data plan.

Get rid of WireLess sync if you're on Verizon. This is the reason for the pinging. Evidently it's set to always be checking into the network.
