If Sprint and Nextel were to merge, what would they call the new company? Sprextel?

    Sextel?

NextSprint actually sounds pretty good but my guess is it will just be Sprint in 5 years.

they're both equally valued in the stock market (very nearly so) - why do you think sprint would be dominant?

or they'll go for something ingeniously creative like

    Nextel Sprint

    or even

    Sprint Nextel

they are about equally valued, but in terms of name recognition, sprint wins hands down.

i see tv ads for sprint every single day. nextel? once every so often. sprint does saturation advertising, nextel doesn't. in the biz community of course, nextel is as well known as sprint, but to the public at large, nope.

    1. Sprint will have slight control as they are putting a few more bucks in on top of the stock swap.

    2. Analysts say there is never such a thing as an equal merger. One always comes out on top in the end.

    3. Sprint has the CDMA knowledge base, network in place and high speed already building. Nextel has nothing that will remain.

    4. Sprint has better name recognition and has been around for over 100 years. Nextel started in the 80's.

I'm wondering if there will be a Sprint Corp that is a holding company of Wireless and Landline divisions. Sprint has a huge portion of the Internet backbone so the landline division will be no small potatoes. All of the wireless traffic will go over the landline division as well.

It will ultimately end up that Sprint will get the Nextel userbase, the precious spectrum and likely PTT will be enhanced on Sprint network to make transition easier. Perhaps even a gateway between their two PTT systems.

Plus...the Sprint top executive is said to be the designated head honcho. My guess is that the Nextel name wil disappear. It is completely associated with the older iDEN technology and the related limited Motorola handset selection.

i think what xeno and awester said just nailed it on its head

    Another point...

The only reason Nextel is profitable is because they are running on an antiquated system. They are not spending money to upgrade the network so are making money. It's short term profit but stagnation. Sprint continually spends billions yet still shows nearly the same profit.

yeah, just spoke w/ a nextel employee this PM - sprint gets the CEO position, but nextel gets the chmn of the board

So will it become the Sprint series? (I am not a race fan whatsoever, but Nextel dumped a ****-ton of $$ to change it from Winston-Cup Series).

Looks like Anastrophe is the winner. The name will be Sprint-Nextel... but we all know that it will affectionately be referred to as Sprextel.

If Nextel uses GSM, how will it combine with Sprint CDMA?
  15. #15
Nextel DOES NOT use GSM, but anyway, all of Nextel's system has to be changed anyway because of federal mandates to move to the 1.9 gHz block from where they currently are because they interfere with public service radio waves

This suggests Sprint is emerging as the buyer of Nextel, not a merger...

Once the new company is formed, I think Sprint should update its logo design. I think it looks sort of dated.

I'm partial to Tel-Sprint (I'm envisioning a confessional type booth for customers to vent, gripe, complain, or even kudo)
