I'm hoping this gives HP incentive to release its phones through Sprint.

Wondering the same thing...essentially, could a current EVO just receive a software/firmware update for LTE or is it an issue of the hardware being unable to work on an LTE network?

EDIT: new article up on Engadget

    http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/17/s...-complement-w/

Azzi suggested that an LTE network which complements its current WiMAX network might be the answer, and he even suggested that we could see tri-band LTE phones with a WiMAX radio "velcroed on."

Maybe it also played a part in the $10 charge for all smart phones. This way 4G users can't complain that they are paying more when 4G goes away.
Both this and the Echo speak to this, though I agree Echo is fail all by itself.
