So here is my most recent story. After my Off-Grid with the Palm Pre went a bit viral, and after I posted a positive battery review today, I contacted Sprint today to talk to them about the fact that my elegant and dainty wife smashed her Samsung Highnote in the van door.

I had contacted Sprint a week ago fearing such a thing and asked if I could get insurance on her phone and they told me "no" since I was past the thirty days. I understand (I have insurance on the Pre).

So, wifey puts the phone down in the van hatch and slams the door down on it. Our fault completely, I understand.

So I call Sprint for a little "what can we do?" talk, and they said... NOTHING. $150 is the cheapest phone, you will pay full retail, any questions?

I said, "you know, maybe you can help me out... get me a cheap $50 phone (what I paid for the Highnote originally) or something?". NOPE. Full price bucko, and we never heard of Salty Off-Grid. So I say, "Fine, I think I will just cancel and maybe go elsewhere". Fine they say, Call Customer Service to cancel. I thought I was talking to customer service, but I am informed I am talking to some International Service center. So then I get Juan Carlos at Sprint Customer service. He is very understanding, but tells me if I will pay the full smack for the $150 phone, he can rebate me back something like $90 or so. And I'll have to pay full bill up front. Now I am just kind of pissed because I have really put some time and effort into trying to help the Pre (which I totally believe in) succeed. So I said, "You know, no. I think I'll just go ahead and cancel. I'll write a new review entitled "Palm hits a home run but gets strangled and raped by Sprint rounding third". So he says he'll talk to his manager and forwards me to the manager who is not in the office.

Meanwhile, elsewhere on the ranch... Palm twitters me and offers to try to make things right (YAY PALM). Still waiting to hear. Frankly Sprint ought to give me a big bushel basket of Palm Pre's to hand out to neighbors and friends for all I've done for them.

Maybe we can start an online protest and Jesse Jackson them into helping a fella out. Sprint hates me because I have a big beard. Beardism. That is it.

What is wrong with these people?

Sounds like Sprint...sorry to hear about your experience...we've all been there with this company. If they ever stop being the cheapest carrier around they'll be doomed...

Well, hopefully Palm will step in and help Sprint from screwing themselves. It looks like they might. Still no word from Sprint, and they told me they'd call me right back.

Just curious... Why do you think Sprint should replace something you admittedly destroyed on their dime? I appreciate, and have enjoyed your reviews, but that was a decision you decided to make. Should Sprint really give your wife a free phone?

I can see Palm hooking you up since you have given them positive feedback, but so have many other people. I just don't get it.

I do hope Palm gives you the free pre, but I just sort of feel like you are acting like a spoiled child who dropped his ice cream cone and will scream till the haggard mother gives in.

You like the phone, you like Sprints service, you don't like that you can't get something for free due to user carelessness... I don't get it.

Wow. I have no clue who you are. This post makes you sound like a spoiled brat.

"pay the full smack for the $150 phone, he can rebate me back something like $90 or so"

That sounds like a pretty good deal considering the damage was your wife's fault.

What's a Salty Off-Grid? Is he another Michael Jackson...world famous? LOL

Actually I can see where you would think that with not much information. Here are the facts, I have asked Sprint for nothing other than to cancel my service. Period. I did not ask for a Palm Pre or any other phone. When they told me to pay full price for a replacement, I asked them nicely to consider whether that was all they could do and to consider that my positive review for the battery life had just been Tweeted by Palm only 30 minutes earlier. Just give it a look-see and see if there is anything you can do. They offered nothing. So I said, I'd take a dixie cup and a string or any old refurb or anything and they offered nothing. After I said, "Ok, let's just go ahead and cancel and I'll pay the $400 cancellation fee" they said, "what if we knock off $90 but you'll have to pay it all up front. I said NO. So then I got transferred to a manager who was not in and who has not called me back.

So frankly from Sprint's point of view all I have done is asked to cancel and give them $400 which hardly sounds like a spoiled brat. I mean just because I turn down their weak full price/rebate scheme in favor of giving them $400 and dropping them doesn't really make me spoiled.

I only mentioned ON PRECENTRAL that if they were smart they would help a guy out. I never threatened or asked for anything at all from Sprint. Most of my above statement was sarcastic and for humor purposes. It was not a transcript.

I hope that clears it up.

I'm sorry dude, but your sense of entitlement is absolutely astounded. Pull the silver spoon out of your mouth, you don't get a free ride in this world, especially for stupid crap like that. You're such a fool you'll spend MORE to cancel than to get an actual phone. Friggin genius!

sounds like a fair explanation to me... but by paying the ETF, then going to a new company, signing another contract, buying new phones, all be much more expensive, and a lengthy process then just buying the new phone and getting the $90 credit when you get billed?

BTW, didn't mean to offend you. Thanks for the explanation.

It sounds to me like you expected that since your post went 'viral' and mentioned Sprint service that they'd just give you another phone on subsidy regardless of your actual eligibility. And because they didn't, you decided to pack up your toys and go home (i.e. cancel your service).
You might have checked eBay or something for a cheap Sprint phone for your wife to use. Well, I guess all's well that ends well for you since its shaping up like you'll be getting a free Pre for your troubles.

Ah, ok, in my post above I said this:

"So I said, "You know, no. I think I'll just go ahead and cancel. I'll write a new review entitled "Palm hits a home run but gets strangled and raped by Sprint rounding third"

Ok, I didn't close the quotes after "cancel" but closed it after my sarcastic response that I never said to Sprint. You can see it by the re-open quote before "Palm". That was in my head, kind of a humorous running dialog. So I can see that if I had said that a) it might have been funny, but b) it could be taken to be a bit extreme. I didn't say that to Juan Carlos at Sprint. I said it in my head. This post was written a bit sarcastically and out of an attempt at humor, not as a transcript of what I said with Sprint.

I know plenty of people that have ruined their phones and have had to buy new ones if they haven't had insurance on Sprint as well as other carriers and none of them have huffed about it like this. Despite trying to get some good deals, it was their fault in destroying their phone and they ended up buying new handsets and staying with their provider. I got my Pre at Sprint and I'm still waiting for my rebate which they happened to send in for me. I don't think its a bad deal to pay the $150 for a new phone and wait for a rebate check that brings the set down to $60. At least the guy was trying to help.

I'm gald to see you wrote this one. Frankly, I started to respond when I first read this thread, and decided I like your posts so much that I wanted to check my initial reaction some. I was about to come back and post anyway, when I saw Rhui's post, which almost could have been written by me.

I think maybe the sudden attention you've gotten may have gone to your head just a tad. No offense, it probably would have mine too. However, the post did sound whiney, and as if you had a sense of entitlement.

Personally, I think Palm would do well to get you set up. Yours is a great story and the reviews have been interesting - but it did sound very much like you were making some rash demands, and the "raped rounding third" was way over the top. No one "raped" anyone on this.

That said, I wonder, have you considered that if/when they give you a Pre now, that maybe some will look at your future reviews with a mor jaundiced eye, thinking there's a quid-pro-quo in your writings?

    Just a thought...

First you asked for a cheap $50 phone, they do not sell a $50 phone. You had no insurance on that phone, you expect them to give you a deal on a new phone because you write a good article about Sprint. Then you want to cancel because your wife broke her phone and is still in the middle of a 2 year phone contract.

Just by an phone on e-bay and go away quietly please!
  18. #18
At least Sprint was willing to defray the cost a bit. Do you honestly believe at&t or verizon would've been more helpful in this situation? Hell no.

The option to cancel is part of the contract. I just asked to exercise that clause in the contract. I started the new thread in order not to cloud up the positive review thread on the Palm Pre battery life.

To clear up the above info, here is my transcript with Sprint chat:

07/08/2009 03:37:08PM System: "Please hold and the next available agent will be with you shortly."
07/08/2009 03:37:15PM Session Started with Agent (Mirelys)
07/08/2009 03:37:15PM System: "Thank you for contacting Sprint. My name is Mirelys. In order to assist you; may I please have your first and last name as well as the reason for your chat today?"
07/08/2009 03:37:48PM Bunker: "Michael Bunker. My wife accidentally smashed her Samsung Highnote and I need to know what my options are."
07/08/2009 03:38:17PM Agent (Mirelys): "I would be more than happy to assist you with this today."
07/08/2009 03:38:27PM Agent (Mirelys): "Just one moment while I access your account, please."
07/08/2009 03:40:14PM Agent (Mirelys): "Help us ensure you receive important news and promotional alerts when you???re eligible for special savings! The email address we have on file for you is: bunker**********k@hotmail.com."
07/08/2009 03:40:46PM Bunker: "that is correct"
07/08/2009 03:41:26PM Agent (Mirelys): "May I please have the ********** digit mobile number this is in reference to?"
    07/08/2009 03:41:43PM Bunker: "*******************"
07/08/2009 03:42:29PM Agent (Mirelys): "Thank you for that information, Michael. One moment while I review your account, please."
07/08/2009 03:44:19PM Agent (Mirelys): "Just one more moment, please."
07/08/2009 03:46:40PM Agent (Mirelys): "I appreciate your patience. I am still researching the information you requested."
07/08/2009 03:48:13PM Agent (Mirelys): "It is my job to ensure that I have fully resolved the issues that prompted you to chat with me. Have I resolved all of your issues today?"
07/08/2009 03:48:25PM Agent (Mirelys): "I'm sorry, please disregard."
    07/08/2009 03:48:33PM Bunker: "lol thanks"
07/08/2009 03:51:55PM Agent (Mirelys): "Michael, I have thoroughly reviewed your account and I see that neither of the lines on your account have a savings off a device upgrade available and that the line in question did not have the Total Equipment protection plan on the line to cover any dama"
    ges to the device.
07/08/2009 03:52:23PM Bunker: "Yes. So what options do I have"
07/08/2009 03:53:50PM Agent (Mirelys): "At this time, the only options you have to have your device replaced is purchasing a new device for her line at full retail cost."
07/08/2009 03:54:36PM Bunker: "Can I just drop her line altogether and change my plan to the Everything Data for the Pre only?"
07/08/2009 03:55:27PM Agent (Mirelys): "You do have that option, however, because it have been more than ********** days since the line was activated, you may be liable for the $********** early termination fee."
07/08/2009 03:56:14PM Bunker: "Ok, so what is the cheapest phone I can purchase, and can I then just keep the Everything Data for the Pre and put her on the **********.********** plan?"
07/08/2009 03:57:00PM Agent (Mirelys): "Just one moment while I research this information you have requested."
07/08/2009 03:58:55PM Agent (Mirelys): "I appreciate your patience. I am still researching the information you requested"
07/08/2009 04:01:19PM Agent (Mirelys): "Michael, the cheapest device that I have been able to locate at full retail cost is the Samsung S********** for $**********.**********."
07/08/2009 04:02:16PM Bunker: "Ok, well I would prefer to pay the $********** termination fee and may choose to terminate the Palm Pre as well if that is the best we can do in a bad situation. Thanks for your help."
07/08/2009 04:04:40PM Agent (Mirelys): "Michael, I can certainly understand that this may be a difficult position for you, however, I would not be able to provide you with any additional discounts or savings on a device purchase. I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience."
07/08/2009 04:05:13PM Bunker: "In fact why not just go ahead and terminate both lines and I will pay the terminate fee when I get the bill. Thank you."
07/08/2009 04:06:03PM Agent (Mirelys): "Michael, in order to complete your request to have the lines on your account terminated, you will have to contact our Account Services team. Would you like me to provide you with their number?"
    07/08/2009 04:06:12PM Bunker: "yes"
07/08/2009 04:06:54PM Agent (Mirelys): "To better serve you, we would like to speak with you regarding your inquiry. Please contact an Account Services specialist by calling (**********) **********-********** We value your business and appreciate the opportunity to serve your wireless needs."
07/08/2009 04:07:22PM Agent (Mirelys): "I will stay on the line until you have been able to reach a representative, if you would like."
07/08/2009 04:07:41PM Bunker: "that's ok, calling now. Thank you."
07/08/2009 04:08:20PM Agent (Mirelys): "Great, please let me know when you have someone on the line with you."
07/08/2009 04:10:50PM Agent (Mirelys): "Are you still on hold?"
    07/08/2009 04:11:00PM Bunker: "yes"
    07/08/2009 04:11:37PM Bunker: "ok"
07/08/2009 04:12:29PM Agent (Mirelys): "You have someone on the line from Account Services with you?"
    07/08/2009 04:12:36PM Bunker: "yes"
07/08/2009 04:12:51PM Agent (Mirelys): "Great, you have a wonderful day, Michael."

As you can see, I did not threaten or bully Sprint. I didn't mention the reviews or any other extraneous info. When I called Sprint customer service, I only mentioned the reviews after Sprint asked me if I was happy with their solution, which I was not, and they asked me why. The rest of that in my post was my usual attempt at humor and sarcasm. As it stands, I have just asked Sprint to cancel my service, and have not heard back from them.
