For those who're still using 650 or sometimes being forced back to 1xRTT when using 700p, this is actually good news: Verizon has done rolling out the CPOP. This is an exerpt from the VZW website:

CPOP (Circuit Precedence over Packet Data) is a new feature that has been added to all 1X-capable devices at Verizon Wireless. Unless you subscribe to Verizon Wirelessí Push to Talk feature, CPOP will allow you to receive your incoming voice calls even while you are engaged in an active data session. This feature already exists on Verizon Wireless EVDO-capable devices, but now it also will be functional when the user of an EVDO-capable device is engaged in an active 1X data session outside of the EVDO coverage area.

Here's the link for more information: CPOP.

There's a possibility that the roll out has not reached some areas yet though the feature is scheduled to be done by July 15th of 2006. FYI: it works for me in San Diego, CA.

That is pretty freaking sweet. I hope they enable that for Sprint.

Just tested it out and it worked. Listening to landline, as soon as I finished dialing, I saw amber light go out on treo (made sure it was downloading some stuff). By second ring (once took to third ring), treo showed the incoming call. Now I can breath easier with 4 email accounts being pushed to my treo (thanks to Chatter).

Well good news for VZW users...not as good for Sprint. See the email I rec'd from Sprint eCustomer Care below:

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting Sprint together with Nextel. I will be happy
to assist you regarding the voice calls during the active data session.

Currently, we have not launched the enhancement called CPOP. Currently,
during an active data connection mode, voice calls go directly to
voicemail. However, you have a great suggestion. At Sprint, we
appreciate your concerns and feedback. I will definitely forward your
concern to the appropriate department. We value our customers opinions
and perceptions, and we thank you for your input.

Thank you for contacting us, and we look forward to serving you.

Question: VZW has introduced an enhancement called CPOP (circuit
precedence over packet data) which allows phone calls to override active
data sessions when in a 1xrtt data coverage area. Does Sprint have
plans to provide this service as well? I am aware that when using EVDO
calls will disrupt an active data session, however my home area (xxxxx)
only has 1xrtt and I would very much like to have the ability to receive
emails on a PUSH'd basis w/o losing phone calls to voicemail.

    thx

    Question: Dear CSR,

I am currently a Sprint Treo 650 customer and was curious if there were any plans
in the near future that Sprint will be implementing something similar to
the "CPOP (Circuit Precedence over Packet Data)" network feature that
Verizon Wireless has just finished implementing across their network.
The feature allows incoming calls to come through while the phone is in
an active data session. Any insight you can give me would be greatly
    appreciated. Thank you.

he should be showing up any minute now telling us that sprint has decided to "focus" on providing "the best customer experience" rather than releasing the best phones OR the best network...its all part of the sprint master plan to be the true 3rd wheel of US cellular carriers. roflmao

    Funny.
Sometimes we get carried away a bit when we all wear our masks in an open forum. Well, maybe he/she really knows something that others don't know. As a new TC visitor I always find amusing to see how the Sprint fans heckle Verizon's (and vice versa).

    Anyway, have a great day!
