A week ago I did the Sprint ESN swap to disable my Treo650 and activate my Treo700p, obviously keeping the same phone number. Today I had the 650 (phone) turned on as I was cleaning it up for a hand-me-down. Then I got an incoming text message and both my 650 and 700p beeped! The same incoming message was received by both phones! This happened multiple times. I tried sending outgoing txt messages from the 650 but it errored out. Weird....

Your old phone will even signal voice mails. You should turn off the phone after an esn swap. The phone is still programmed for your old number even though sprint show the ESN as being swaped. I have even lost voicemails or sms's before by having both phones on.

So if I wanted to dump the 650 on ebay what would I do to prevent the buyer from getting my text messages before they activated it with a new number?

Do you have the 650's MSL code? If so, you can do the following...

    1) From the dial pad enter ##786#
    2) From the next screen select MENU>RESET
    3) Enter the MSL code and select OK

This effectively does a zero out reset, wiping all data, even the programmed phone number and MSID.
