Seeking source for real-world user tests. PC World Review suggests not up to par with EVDO. Another article. HSDPA's advantage may be latency performance in some cases.

Methodology: Filtered out are unrealistic results (dl over 2Mbps and ul over 200K) and multiple entries by zipcode within a few hours. For duplicate zips near same time, the highest speed was kept. This should give more realistic averages and factor out people who test multiple times in a row. These are all entries that have over 130Kbit/sec. The assumption is, if under 130K, it might have been a 1xRTT connection.

    Sprint
EVDO Coverage claimed: 150m+ population reported in December 2005. As of Feb, Sprint claims 212 markets but it's really only 120-130+ contiguous distinct markets with significant coverage. Sprint has mentioned an expansion to 260m in 2007. According to RCR Wireless News, Sprint is adding EVDO at a rate of covering 14m population a week. Sprint has all 1900mhz towers and can add EVDO to any of them. Click here for EVDO Coverage Map.

    Verizon
EVDO Coverage claimed: 150m+ population reported in December 2005. As of Feb, Verizon claims 180+ markets but it's really only 70+ contiguous distinct markets. No source found on expansion plans. Verizon has a mix of 800/1900mhz towers and tends to only put EVDO on 1900 so they may not be able do >75% of network. If considering Verizon EVDO, may want to check if 1900mhz towers are in your area. Click here for EVDO Coverage Map - select Vcast.

    Cingular
HSDPA Coverage claimed: About 20 major markets. Plans to expand to 100 markets by end of 2006. HSDPA is not GSM based and therefore is a total forklift upgrade for cellsites. Will be interesting to see what % of network becomes HSDPA in a couple years. PC World Review suggests the coverage maps are less than honest.

    Sprint
EVDO Terms of Service: No specific restrictions other than unlawful or excessive abuse. Sprint actually promotes streaming video and online game use. There are no known cases of Sprint sending out letters to users for excessive abuse.

    Verizon
EVDO Terms of Service: Not allowed... Legal streaming music/movies/radio, VoIP, online games, webcams, among other things are "officially" not allowed. There are several reported cases of Verizon sending out letters for use against terms - it appears to be for those who do over 3-5GB per month.

    Cingular
HSDPA Terms of Service: Appears less restrictive than Verizon but more restrictive than Sprint. Details here.

    Sprint
    EVDO Rates:
    - Laptop cards $60/month w2yr contract/voice acct otherwise $80/month.
    - PowerVision phones start at $15/month, includes unlimited data/browsing within phone.
    - USB tethering to laptop officially available on all PowerVision phones with two plan options - $25/month for 40MB with per KB charge that caps to $70/month OR (new) $40/month unlimited flat charge.
    - Some PowerVision phones can be hacked to tether on the $15/month account (w/risk of terms of service violation or worse).

    Verizon
    EVDO Rates:
    - Laptop cards $60/month w2yr contract/voice acct otherwise $80/month.
    - VCast phones start at $15/month but plan does not include unlimited data/browsing within phone, which is $45/month.
    - USB tethering to laptop officially available on new BlackBerry EVDO phone and some VCast phones - $60/month unlimited flat charge.
    - Treo 700w and some PDA phones do not have official support for tethering but the Junefabrics PDANet hack works on the $45 account (w/risk of terms of service violation or worse).

    Cingular
    HSDPA Rates:
For data cards, appears to be $60/month with 2yr contract/voice plan otherwise $80/month. Appears to be $45-$50/month for PDAs and BlackBerries. Not clear on tethering details. Please post if you find more details. This is all I could find.

    Sprint
    Key Points:
    - More markets have EVDO, especially <1.5 million; large expansion plan to 100% of network
    - Avg performance currently higher
    - Lower priced EVDO USB/Bluetooth phone tethering and in-phone data
    - Almost entirely unrestricted Terms of Service
    - EVDO built in some Panasonic Toughbooks
    - Free EVDO laptop cards til April 1 '06 (can be acquired on this site)
    - Sprint support monitors/responds on evdoforums.com
    - Browser image compression annoys some. (hack)
    - Sprint's first level support is often poor, go direct to Tier 2 data group: 1.866.818.1944

    Verizon
    Key Points:
    - Can roam slower 1xRTT data on some partners today
    - May have unique coverage on outskirts of some larger metro areas
    - Official Mac support for some laptops
    - EVDO built in some IBM/HP laptops
    - Call-in customer support generally considered better
    - Challenge to rollout >75% network due to 800mhz site limitations for EVDO

    Cingular
    Key Points:
    - Just getting started with 20 markets, 100 by end of 2006
    - HSDPA phones can do voice/data simultaneously
    - Theoretically has better latency but in realworld tests not always case
    - HSDPA to be built in some IBM/Dell laptops
    - Challenge to rollout to 100% network as sites require forklift upgrade

    Voice and older data Networks:
According to the Sprint/Nextel FCC application in 2005, Sprint had over 24,000 cell sites and will be adding 14,000 more on Nextel sites by 2008, adding 1000 for end of 2005. According to this in Feb 2006, Verizon had "over 24,000" cell sites. This suggests Verizon had 22,000, Sprint had 25,000 and Cingular had over 44,000 sites in Aug 2005.

Cingular claims to cover nearly 270 million population natively with voice and 268 million with GPRS and nearly 260 million with EDGE. Verizon claims to reach over 250 million population with native network. Sprint claims to reach over 250 million population with native network and 268 million combined with Nextel sites. Both Sprint and Verizon claim to reach over 290 million with roaming and Cingular likely does as well (need source). Verizon can 1xRTT roam today on most partners while Sprint says 1xRTT data roaming is coming 'very soon' - and to Canadian partners as well.

If any discrepencies or if you have a source with conflicting info, please post as I'm attempting to keep this updated accurately.

Thanks for the update Xeno - hopefully Sprint will keep working the Washington, DC area - so far the EVDO coverage here is fairly skeletal (at least on the Virginia side).

Weird....at CES on January 6th, Verizon was claiming only 60 markets and they were more than Sprint tho I don't recall from the CES article how many sprint said.

Sprint's Nov. 8 Press Release however says:

"Launched in July, the Power Vision EV-DO (evolution, data optimized) wireless service has expanded to more than 141 major markets and more than 250 airports nationwide, and will be accessible on various devices to about 150 million people in over 220 major markets by early 2006."

I think the difference probaly lies in definition of word "coverage". Does it mean full coverage (i.e. everywhere in that area that they have cell service they have EV-DO service) ? Or does it mean partial coverage (i.e we have at least 1 tower in that area upgraded) ?

Saw an independent EVDO site yesterday that listed all of Sprint's and Verizon's maps. Can't seem to find it now. Nether has service out by me on eastern Long Island .

Looking at Verizon's map, claiming "coverage" when they only have about 15% coverage is cheating a bit methinks. But hard to single anyone out when they all apparently doing this.

Both Sprint and Verizon claim >150 million coverage by now. Half the US population lives in metro areas of > 1 million.

Sprint has EVDO in ALL metros over 1 million but does not have outer edges fully covered (or may and the maps aren't updated yet). Sprint is in many markets between 400K-1M so makes up the difference. The 150m claim is reasonable.

Verizon has EVDO in NEARLY all metros over 1 million (not Nashville, Tulsa, OK City, Buffalo, Birmingham and others). But Verizon is also in a few markets under 1M so the 150m coverage claims are likely but probably less than Sprint, which could be up to 170m by now if RCR Wireless News is correct about Sprint rolling out 14m coverage a week. With Sprint's target to reach 100% network with EVDO by 2007, that may be the case.

Verizon's challenges are the 800mhz towers, which do not have much capacity for EVDO. I've heard varying ranges from 50%-80% of Verizon towers are 800mhz. I suspect Nashville and other >1M cities do not have EVDO at all yet because of mostly 800mhz towers. Would be interesting to find out the scoop.

Where can I go to get more info on the future roll-out of EVDO, and Sprint's rumored preference for WiMax as the next gen?

That's where these "claims" fall short of reality. For example:

Long Island, NYC's "bedroom community" has about 3 million people in Nassau (1.4) and Suffolk Counties (1.65). Yet Verizon's coverage is miniscule in this area (gray is broadband area) Just in my "town" of 540,000 which has no broadband EVDO coverage, population density is about 2,000 per square mile with a median income > $75,000. Ya would think this would be a good place to cell broadband especially with traffic jams rivaled only by the Los Angeles area.

I just started adding Cingular comparisons but they are hardly complete. I'll post over on the GSM forums and attempt to get feedback for accuracy.

Found a way to see if a Verizon market is all 800mhz or has some 1900mhz...
    http://wirelessadvisor.com/

Enter zipcode. In the case of Nashville, it appears they are all 800mhz Verizon so it may explain why they don't have Verizon EVDO but other TN cities do.

Too bad that I cannot get a decent Sprint voice signal right smack in the middle of L.A.! I have several co-workers on Sprint, with the latest PRL, and they are all furious with their service, at least in our office.

Not only do I get a perfect signal with Vz, I even get enough of one 4 levels down in the subterranean parking.

If it wasn't for that, it seems that there would be no comparison here. Why is Vz charging 300% more than Sprint?! Don't they feel the slightest need to be competitive? Then again, I never see adds for Sprint's EV-DO, but I see Vz's all the time. Maybe their business plan is effective.

It will also depend on how old the phone is. New phones with newer chipsets make a big difference. My old Sprint phone did not work in my condo elevator, the Treo 650 is the first one to work with no drops. Verizon's 800mhz can help when deeper in buildings but with newer chipsets, 1900 is better than it used to be.

xenophonite, do you have upload results as well?

Upload as well as latency is a major bottleneck for Windows Remote Desktop and Outlook using Exchange on a pc. (yes, this relates to tethering)

I tied Sprint EVDO Merlin card on a recent trip to Manahattan and couldn't get more than just over a 100k up, which just didn't work well.

See uploads here, marked as download/upload...
    http://www.dslreports.com/archive/spcsdns.net?1=1&p=1 (Sprint)
    http://www.dslreports.com/archive/myvzw.com (Verizon)

EVDO Rev 0 does about 60-120Kbps upload with both carriers. Latency is typically 150ms-400ms. In comparison, HSDPA does about 120ms-400ms depending on environment.

When EVDO Rev A comes next year, upload will increase to 1.8Mbps peak and latency will supposedly hit the 50ms range under ideal situations.

Here is a list of cities with EVDO we put together for our users at work who travel often. It is based on Sprint/Verizon maps and announcements. It is likely not complete.

Verizon may have outskirts of some metro areas more broadly covered. Sprint is in many small towns under 50K outside this list.

If you have a source or have accessed EVDO in a city not listed, please post and I'll update the list as 'reported coverage'.
