Just wanted to report that Sprint will be replacing my bad 600 with a 650. I do have the Equipment Replacement Program. The problem with the 600 is that it keeps spontaneously trying to connect with PCS Vision. Often the phone just freezes up when trying to connect. Sometimes this has happened in the middle of a call. It also has frozen up when there's an incoming call, and such callers just hear ringing and the call doesn't roll to voice mail. This has been going on for about 2 months. I finally brought the phone into my local store and after waiting about a half hour while it was in the back with a technician, the guy came back and said they were ordering me a 650.

I've been a Sprint customer for at least 8 years, and I bought my first Treo (a 300) about 2-1/2 years ago. It lasted nearly a year before the flip broke and they replaced it with a refurb 300 that had the same problem about 5 months later, while it was still under warranty. They replaced that with my current phone, a refurb 600, about a year ago. It was when I got the 600 that I decided it was worth it to spring for the ERP at $4/month. My new phone should be in by Monday.

I wanted to post this since I wasn't expecting a 650 since I haven't read about anyone getting bumped up like this. These boards have been very helpful to me from the beginning and I hope this info is helpful to some of you.

    Best to all,
    Chris

Could this mean that Sprint may be releasing the 700P soon then?

yes you will be getting a new 650, but you will soon find yourself spending the price of a used 650 to get the same functionality of your 600. ie new 650 versions of all your software, 650 versions of all your accessories etc.

when i received a 600 as a replacement for my 300 i thought to myself how could sprint make money giving thier phones away. then after buying like 5 650 version of software i had already purchase for the 300 "pdanet etc" i realized the deal was not in my favor. the came accessories, case, car chager, headset, stylus, cradle etc. you the price of the 650 in other ways.

i wish you the best, read up on the 650 on the borads and all the info you need is here.

Congrats. I've been considering taking my 600 into Sprint for servicing (read: replacement), and while I don't count on being as lucky as you were, at least your post provides some encouragement. Most of the problems with my 600 have been ongoing (any soft reset forces it into an endless reset loop, which can only be remedied by hitting the home button at just the right time, and trying to "Add Contact" from the call log causes a soft reset), but lately it has been freezing up (probably looking for service, but sometimes it locks completely) a lot more than it used to. I hope to buy a Sprint 700(?) when it becomes available, and my GF will get my 600 -- if they replace the 600 with a 650, she'll be thrilled.

Even if they replace it with a 600, at least you're getting one with a new battery.

I thought you had to put a claim in with lockline to get it replaced under the replacement program. Did the Sprint store take care of it for you through Lockline, or did they just give a you a 650 for having been there for 8 years?

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. I was quite surprised since I was expecting another refurb 600.

GearGodess - sorry, I'm in NY on Long Island.

Bob-C, I don't know exactly what they are doing...just that the sales guy who was helping me took the 600 to the back to "have a technician take a look at it." When he came back, he told me that he had good news, that it was going to be replaced with "a better phone." I actually got a little nervous because I thought maybe he meant a non-Treo, but then he said I was getting a 650. He didn't say anything about the ERP or about my being a customer for 8 years...although I'm sure he could see both of those things when he looked up my records.

I should be picking up the new phone either tomorrow or Monday, so I'll report back after that.

I figured I'd have to buy a few hardware accessories, but will I really need to upgrade my existing software apps?

Jay - I lived in Bellerose for many years, then San Francisco, now Levittown. The Sprint store that has been very accomodating in handling the replacements is in Massapequa, on Sunrise Highway across from the mall.

woo! i think your luck rubbed off on me, chrisa2711! i brought my replacement 600 back to sprint & showed them the keyboard layout was wrong. at first, they didn't consider that a good enough reason to order another replacement. i persisted, so they gave in & ordered a 650 to make sure i didn't get a foreign keyboard again. apparently, the decision is up to the sales rep as to whether you get a refurb 600 or a 650.

Well, I took my 600 in for service on Saturday, and they replaced it with another 600. It still reboots when I try to add a contact from my call log, but at least the infinite reboot loop is gone (although not everything reinstalled properly from my backup). I'll see if the network problems persist. Congrats to those who ended up with 650s.

Okay, I got my Treo 650 (refurb) yesterday. Got it home, loaded new software (which I had to ask for - the clerk didn't know you needed different conduits) and did the hot sync with only a few hiccups. I was very nervous that the software CD that they gave me didn't have anything on the label or the contents that said 650. When it didn't HotSync the first couple of tries, I panicked a little, but did a hard reset and tried again and it worked okay. Did a lot of playing around with it. Then the first problem - when I let it sit for a bit, it froze up. The only sign of life was the blinking green LED. A soft reset solved this, but it happened several times. During this time, I did some tests with my home phone and except for the freezing, everything was looking good. But I need a phone that doesn't freeze up.

Sooooo, I decided to take it back to the store today. This morning, I discoverd that the phone's native earpiece was not working. The speaker (which I use all the time, which is why it took me so long to discover the problem) was working fine.

Bottom line, they gave me a new 650 right out of the box!

I love this Sprint store! They're short on personality and customer service skills, but their results have been good for me. Of course, I've only had the new phone for 2 hours, but the first HotSync went well and I have my fingers crossed.

If anyone out there wants some used but functional Treo 600 accessories (2 chargers, one HS cable, one car charger), I'll send them along for the cost of a Priority Mail flat-rate stamp. Just let me know...
