Is there a database or any way that I can lookup a phone number to see which mobile carrier it belongs to?

This would've been easy before people could transfer their number to another cellular company... but is there a way to do it now?

try fonefinder.net, usually works for me

Interesting, but I don't think it's completely reliable. It shows my Sprint PCS number as Sprint Spectrum, (which it originally was) which hasn't existed for years.

The real problem is that it only uses 7 of the 10 digits (e.g., 703-555-1). 555-1234 could be on Verizon while 555-1235 is on Sprint and 555-1236 is on Cingular, but this site won't differentiate between them. I think it only shows what carrier the number was initiallly assigned to. In fact, I just checked my wife's number, which started out on Verizon but has been ported to Sprint. Fonefinder still shows it as "CELLCO PARTNERSHIP DBA VERIZON WIRELESS - VA".

whitepages.com reverse phone lookup has always worked for me. probably like phone finder it occaisonally says sprint spectrum, but i don't really care- I know who it really is.

That one still shows my wife's number as Verizon, even though it was ported to Sprint last October.

Nope, don't want reverse lookup, want carrier lookup.
