    Good day all,

I bought an unlocked Veer from ebay a year ago to use with my 2nd line and out of the box, everything worked just fine.

I stopped using that line and I didn't need the Veer so I kept it safe in its box for around 6 months, a week ago I decided to go back to the Veer but I'm having a weird issue.

At the activation screen, the Veer doesn't recognize SIM cards and keeps saying "check SIM, SOS only", I tried 3 different SIMs with different service providers with no luck, thought there is something wrong with the SIM slot itself, so I went into DEVMODE and tried searching manually for available carriers, it can see can detect the signals and gave me the full list of available carriers but it wouldn't register the SIM no matter what I try.

Tried Doctoring the Veer, restarting, .... etc but unfortunately I'm still stuck, and I'm starting to suspect the Veer is banned from the network or something.

Any help would be truly appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Questions...

    1) When you originally got the Veer and it was working, what Carrier SIM was put in it?

    2) Is it the same Carrier whose SIM you used this new time that did not work?

    3) They said it was unlocked on the eBay auction: did it come with an unlock code or was it supposedly unlocked already?

    Hey there,

1- It was working perfectly, it didn't come with a SIM, i had the an Orange SIM on it.

2- Yes (Also an Orange SIM) but in a different country, i also tried other Carrier SIMs with no luck.

3- Nope, no unlock code, it worked out of the box and had a Dr. Skipped Profile, i doctored the Veer and activated the phone on the new SIM.

OK... So it is unlocked. Orange is NOT an original carrier for Veer in Europe.

And once unlocked = always unlocked. Doctoring, etc. does not negate an unlock.

So we come down to what frequencies are on the phone and which are needed where you are at... What country are you in now?

Check the frequencies used by Orange in your current country here: Mobile country code - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

...and match it against the frequencies on the Veer's radio. Is it the EU version or the NA? Here's the radio specs: HP Veer vs. HP Veer 4G - GSMArena.com

That is probably a long shot diagnosis anyway, but easy to rule out just on paper.

    OTHERWISE...

You may need to update an entry appropriate for your country/carrier and add it to carrierdb.json.

If your radio matches up and that isn't the issue, let me know what country you are in and I'll try and find you the proper entry to add to your carrierdb.json file.

    Hello again RumoredNow,

i just ran a test on the Veer and it returned a code 1000 Modem error!

    Thought it might help

Alright... here is the same error on a TouchPad... WiFi Searching Error Code 1000

If that doesn't resolve issues (and it seems to be a WiFi radio issue), leave the name of what country you are in and trying to use Orange.

I've got to run off to work but will look in later.

You Rock !! That didn't cross my mind at all :\

My Veer came from At&t and it is branded with the logo, I checked the link you sent me,

At&t where my phone comes from operate on (GSM 850 / UMTS 850 / UMTS 1900)

When i first activated the phone i was in Saudi Arabia, Carrier Mobily operating on (GSM 900 / UMTS 2100) which is kinda weird coz the frequencies are totally different (at least to my understanding)

I'm currently in Israel / Palestine on Orange and i can see that Orange operate at (GSM 900 / UMTS 900 / GSM 1800 / UMTS 2100) which is also weird as they operate on the same frequency like "Mobily" so i wonder why the phone wouldn't connect

i also need to be able to switch to a Palestinian operator when needed (Jawwal GSM 900)

and i travel allot to Amman, Jordan and need to be able to also use (Orange GSM 900).

Hope I'm not being a pain, can't thank you enough !!!!!

    Cheers !

The NA Veer has 2 radios:
    2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 (quad-band)
    3G Network HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100 (tri-band)

    So Saudi/Mobily @ GSM 900, UMTS 2100 = yes 2G, yes 3G +

    Israel/Orange @ GSM 900/1800, UMTS @ 900/2100 = yes 2G, yes 3G +

    Palestine/Jawwal @ GSM 900 = yes 2G, no 3G

    Jordan/Orange @ GSM 900 = yes 2G, no 3G

So in any of those areas, with any of those SIM cards, you should be able to get Voice and 2G EDGE data. Also in Saudi Arabia and Israel you should get 3G or even H+ data speed...

The problem isn't the radios in the Veer.
    ----------

I pulled a copy of carrierdb.json off my AT&T Veer... Then I checked carrier by carrier. There are entries for all of them you listed except Jawwal in Palestine. So your Orange-Israel SIM should work.

Here's a thread from June 2011: My Pre Seems Dead -- Quick Test Reveals Error Code 1000 Modem

Moderator sledge got a quick test Modem Error 1000 and it was because he accidentally had the "Roam Only" button turned "On" under the phone settings.

I'm going to have to guess that something is set wrong in the phone settings. Please check those. Maybe some screencaps would help diagnose the problem.
    ----------

Additionally... I combed over the copy of carrierdb.json from my GSM Unlocked Pre 2 and it has entries for all the carriers you mentioned, including Jawwal. Here is a copy of that file: carrierdb.json

Download the file and remember the location you saved it at.

Put your Veer in Developer Mode and connect to the computer. Open WOSQI. (For me, I always have to put Veer in Dev Mode and reboot for WOSQI to see it.)

Click on Tools > Send File

Navigate to the carrierdb.json file you downloaded from this post.

For location to send it to use: /etc/carrierdb

That will give you an updated file which includes Jawwal. Here is a more full explaination of editing carrierdb.json. HOWTO: Edit your carrierdb.json file
    ----------

I don't think the updated .json is going to fix the immediate problem - check those phone settings. Toggle in and out of airplane mode, reboot, etc. all while the new SIM is in the phone... Get some screencaps of the phone settings if you can...

Good luck and let me know how it is going.

Hey, hey, hey... stop all!! I believe that your simcard reader in the Veer is damaged.

"SOS only" message happen if there is no one network that accept your simcard (something as "Bad Esn") or the phone cannot find the simcard inside (if is missing or if is damaged).

IF the Veer is unlocked, gonna work in 2G or 3G network without problem.

IF the Veer is unlocked and there is no 2G or 3G network, the smartphone gonna show the messagem "Network search" or "No signal".

IF the Veer is sim locked, gonna ask for unlock code when you turn on the device.

    This is very common...

    Best Regards...

Hey there, been over loaded with work and only got the chance to give it a shot today, unfortunately it didn't work, edited the carrierdb file with no luck, swapped the file with others which has the missing carriers but the thing is still dead

    Any other ideas?

    Hey Rnp,

Thanks for the feedback, when I manually search for a network it does show all the available networks, does that mean anything?

Is there a way to confirm if I have a bad ESN?

Sending the device for a repair is out of the question as there are no authorized service centers for hp phones where I am at the moment, forced to try other solutions!

Let me know if there is Anyang left to do, thanks once again.

    Cheers ....

    Show all available networks?

Look, SOS only can be a physical problem in Simcard (the device cannot read the chip) or the networks cannot accept - or because the device IMEI is in some "black list", or because the account Simcard is deactivated / locked, or because there is some "partial problem" in Simcard or in the device Simcard reader.

    Why "partial problem"?

Because the device can read the Simcard but; maybe, cannot repass all informations to the network validate the account. Sometimes, can be a problem only when is trying to read one contact... I don't know, I'm not a specialist area.

When I has some problem here, I have one technician that solve cleaning and soldering the contacts...

    Call if the problem continue.

    Hey RumoredNow / RNP,

It's been a crazy month and i didn't get the chance to thank you guys for your time and support.

for an update, it seems like the problem is with SIM slot as RNP mentioned, messed around with the carrierdb files for a while but it didn't work.

I'm currently using my mind numbing slow Pixi Plus and the Veer will go back to the box until i stumble upon an official service center.

    Once again, many thanks guys.

    Quick update:

Took the risk and handed the Veer over to a local maintenance shop, turns out the SIM connector cable was burnt in a very weird way !!!! anyway, he replaced the cable and brought the Veer back to life !!!! but .... somehow lost Bluetooth and Wifi which is annoying as i'm unable to update the HP App catalog on carrier data ...

They confirm that there is nothing wrong (Hardware related) and it must be the software, doctored the Veer twice with no luck so far, the spinning wheel shows that it is trying to power the bluetooth/Wifi but nothing happens ... seems like i'm gonna have to live with it as is ... unless someone has a fix or a way to diagnose this issue, please do drop me a message ...

btw ... they followed the tear down wiki from WebOS Internals to know their way around the phone as they have never seen a Veer before WebOS communities rule ..

Because I'm seeing this issue quite a bit ... check this thread: HP App Catalog Download Failed

and download the zip for the .ipk for the app catalog update (2nd last post right now) and install with Webos quick install.

It seems the app catalog update no longer works for most people.

    Breenan,

Appreciate your assistance, i actually tried the "Roll back time" trick yesterday and it worked just fine, the catalog updates and opens but it is stuck at the catalog loading screen.

Will give your method a shot after work and will report back.

    Cheers ...
