I must have accidently clicked the "pay now" button twice, so instead of donating $20, I donated $40, hey, no worries, it's for a good cause

Glad to know it's not something most users would run into.

$566 - hopefully enough to replace this bricked US AT&T device with an unlocked EU-bands Veer from Germany (now that I know how to swap the keyboard on a Veer) so I can do 3G speeds on it in Australia.

Hmm the ATT Veer has both the 1900 and 2100 band for HSPA and thought Australia does the 2100 right? Should get 3G down there with it.

Another $10 here, and a commitment to another $10 if it happens to Rod again.

I would hope that this can be made repairable - did you damage hardware with the software command - seems this should not be possible.

Cheers

Andrew

Thumbs up

I'm on vacay and not trolling the forums as usual. Just saw this. Maybe too late but add vente-cinco pesos (conf:7BM25123H6311903U) to the total.

$611.....maybe add next day shipping.

It seems that there is a new A6 chip, which is related to the touchstone interface (charging and touch to share). This chip seems to be programmable. There is a binary called PmA6Updater which programs it. Interrupting that binary while it is running will brick a device.

So it seems that correct programming of the A6 chip is required to boot the device.

Hence my advice is to stay well away from the PmA6Updater binary, and programming of this A6 chip.

And since this post is linked from the Engadget article, here is the PayPal button that they neglected to include in their article:

An off-contract device purchased at full price ($550 including shipping to Australia) by Rod Whitby was used in this tear-down. To recoup that cost, your PayPal donation is requested.

The annoying thing in Australia is that either model may be the correct one depending on the circumstances (and this is not a problem exclusive to the HP handsets - the iPhone 4 is about the only one on the market right now where you don't have this issue). UMTS frequencies by carrier in Australia:

Telstra: 850 nationwide + 2100 metropolitan
Optus: 900 regional/2100 metropolitan
Vodafone: 900 regional/2100 & limited 850 metropolitan
3: 2100 metropolitan (roams on Telstra 850 outside of metro areas)

So it isn't so much 3G in Australia (I'm happily using an AT&T Pre+ and North American Pre2 on Telstra 3G) but "3G outside of metropolitan areas in Australia on carriers other than Telstra".

Aside from New Zealand, I don't know of any other markets where both 850 and 900MHz UMTS are in use.
