Sent this email to them last night. Anyone else having the same issue? The exact same thing happened in October 2012, and they had to do an update to fix it.

A few days ago, the USA Today app on my HP Touchpad stopped working properly. The app opens, and the Photos of the Day are all there --- but the bars below (News, Money, Sports, Life, Tech and Travel) are all empty. As if the app has not completely loaded.

It's definitely not my Touchpad, which I've rebooted, etc. This began on Sunday, I believe. Before then everything on the app worked fine. Are you working on a fix for this?

It's unfortunate to see another app break but being five years since the last webOS device was released and without an App Catalog to distribute any update I'd say it's highly unlikely they'll release a fix for this.
    Devices: Pre3 16GB (AT&T - webOS 2.2.4) | White TouchPad 4G 32GB (AT&T - webOS 3.0.5 + LunaCE)

I agree, but these situations have a number of outcomes:
    • The url source of the information has changed and the app can be easily patched with the new address.
    • The API has changed, but is available and a (perhaps more complex) patch can be made.
    • A change is made (sometimes specifically to lock out 3rd party apps) that is not easily discovered.
    • The service itself has shut down.

I think that covers most circumstances and the first two can be tackled by someone skilled & willing.

I've added this the the zombie list.

This is the only one that might apply under the circumstances. So sad if this is true. First Zito, now this. =sigh=

They missed that part, too, since I've sent two emails with no response - not even automated. I know it's the right address, because it's posted on their site (usatodaymobile@usatoday.com). Anybody have another idea on how to reach them? And has anyone else been able to replicate the problem?

    Thanks!

If they could just provide the updated links that'd be nice. Then a smart person can patch it in similar to the AccuWeather maps solution.

The current link works fine. That's not the problem. The problem (same as in October 2012) is that the app only partially loads. All the photo sections at the top of the page opens just fine, and all are clickable. But the sections below (news, travel, etc) are all blank except for the section headers. Even the Help button within the app works fine. Here's what they posted to a WebOS forum about the problem in 2012:

Back in October 2012 the exact same problem occurred, was posted on a WebOS forum, and this is how USA Today replied:

Thank you for taking the time to write to USA TODAY.

We greatly appreciate you notifying us about this issue. This is a known problem with the HP webOS app, and we apologize for the inconvenience. We will correct the issue with an app update in the next few days.

We appreciate your feedback and continued support.

    Sincerely,

Well, I did a quick check of the Touchpad-app on my desktop, and when I ran the app there I got the following error is the console:

Failed to load resource: the server responded six times with a status of 403 (Forbidden) http://api.usatoday.com/articles/lig...sj2tqtf7fcxp5g

This URL on it's own responded with an 'Authentication failed'-message. So the most logical assumption is that the API-key is outdated (or has been revoked). So that brings us to: https://developer.usatoday.com/ where it says:

A MESSAGE TO ALL USA TODAY API DEVELOPERS…

Gannett is in the process of re-evaluating the future of our developer portal. If you already have a developer key obtained through the USA TODAY developer portal, this key will still work. But we will not be self-provisioning any new keys at this time, nor will we have any online documentation available.

NOTE: We will also be removing some accounts that do not show any recent activity. You can re-apply for a new key, but if your account is removed, the old key will no longer work.

If you have any questions, please contact Lou Schilling.
(Lou Schilling's email address is available on that site)

This would be a logical next step (assuming USAToday doesn't respond to any emails).

ps. swapping this key for any of the other keys in the app doesn't work. But a quick search makes me think that, only a single line in the Config.jsjsjs $file$ $would$ $have$ $to$ $modified$ $to$ $get$ $things$ $going$ $again$ ($see$ $code$ $below$).

    Code:

Got a response from USA Today, so what do I need to tell them, see below?

    Kurt,

Can you give me the API key that you’ve been using? I can get the key re-enabled for you.

    Thanks,

    Lou

I think it's 'xnpbjw6v33sj2tqtf7fcxp5g' (that should be the key for articles). I'll try to check later this weekend, but based on my previous post this seems to be the failing key.

ps. It's great to see their response, I think helpful developers (for any system, not just webOS) should always be celebrated :-)

Kurt, thanks for Lou's numbers - can you please post his addy?

So... here's the deal. There's nothing wrong with the API key. As I stated in my first post, the app OPENS fine. The top of the App WORKS FINE. It's just that the rest of the app doesn't load.

On June 23 I finally made contact with the Digital Services dept. Spoke at length with Kirk Popovitch (Kpopovich@gannett.com) about the problem. He asked for a screen shot, which I sent. A few days later he said he'd spoken with the software people, who said they app went wonky on the exact day they did a major software upgrade to the app, and that they were no longer supporting the Touchpad, and that they would not fix the code. I left it at that - Zombie App.

When I saw your post I called Lou and left a fairly detailed message and asked him to call me back next week. If you post his addy I'll forward my email to Kirk (with the screenshot) -- but I'll be honest, I don't hold out hope.

I still open the App daily and look at the photos - they're pretty good.

lschill@Gannett.com was his email address I got the note from.

That doesn't convince me that there's nothing wrong with the API key...for a number of reasons:
    1. the top part of the app (pictures) uses a different API key than the bottom part (articles), see my earlier post. So the fact that the top-part works is actually irrelevant to the bottom-part.
    2. Following the 'broken' link (posted in my earlier post) the response is specifically: "error: Key not authorised".

So all evidence is pointing toward an invalidated API key for (as far as I can tell now) ONLY the stories, which matches both the evidence, the app's behavior on the device, and it's behavior in my development-environment. Unless I'm missing something...

    > So all evidence is pointing toward an invalidated API key...

You've made an excellent case. Since Lou Schilling's addy is listed above, and since you seem to have a better grasp of this than me, why don't you write him with an explanation of the Api key problem. If he replies with a fix, you can hopefully tell the rest of us what to do.

    Thanks for your help!
