I like the button, but it would be nice to have the touch sensitive gesture area also, right?

With WOCE, LunaSysMgr is yours to update, what gesture do you want? Where would you put it how would you implement it?

Once used to the Pre2 as a phone, the Touchpad does have that handicap... it would have been so freaking awesome if they had set it up with the gesture area like a giant pre2.

As everyone in the family has Pre2s as their phones, at the beginning (when I got the Touchpads) we almost all tended to swipe and go "ARRRGH".

At last the swipe up to minimize an app does work, so that's at least something.

    I see a pattern...

It would've been even more awesome if they'd make use of the giant borders, like every border would contain a gesture area (without the one finger back swipe though because that would interfere when you're moving you finger a little bit).

Someone could fairly easily implement a back swipe like the playbook does when its in android mode.. A swipe across the left corner. The playbook people advertise the touch sensitive bezel, but frankly, I think that's bs, but I've never had access to it as a web dev, I only get the visible screen area.

YEAH! And the little light would turn on when you rotated it and turn off where it was

    If I understand it correctly...

Ubuntu Touch is implementing a gesture from each edge of the screen. It activates very nicely whenever you swipe inwards from off screen on any of the four sides., So maybe they are just activating a condition on that particular axis...

I.E.: on the X axis a touch that sweeps from 0-10 pixels activates as a swipe up from bottom, also on the X axis a touch that sweeps from 1080-1070 pixels activates as a swipe down from the top - ditto with the Y axis as regards left and right side gestures...

My GNex did not suddenly grow a "touch sensitive bezel" on each edge of the screen when I flashed UT onto it.

I'm sure this is what playbook design did as well.

There is no touch sensitivity in the off screen areas of non-webOS devices (or the TouchPad for that matter), but it can be mimicked.

Blackberry has always said that the playbook has touch sensitive bezels.. But it really appears to operate, poorly, much like you describe.

We already have a patch for Mojo apps to do a two finger back swipe from the right bezel.

Sure, but doing it in LunaCE and actually sending the Back signal would be the better way.

Edge gestures and a proper gesture area are definitely different beasts. Seeing how the Android for Veer gesture area code worked, it's a lot more flexible and a lot easier to stupid proof. It's basically just that the digitizer extends over more pixels than the screen. Without the extra off-screen pixels, detecting when someone may have been starting off screen and swiping in (not just swiping near the edge) is a hairier mess.

Anyways... Yes, OP: gesture area ftw.

It's probably bad etiquette to respond with Android software in a webOS forum, but that's where I found the best solution. I had posted in another thread that a workaround could simply to treat the dock bar as a gesture area.

After a little bit of time with a Nexus 4, i think the best answer (especially with fullscreen apps) is as suggested above: to simply use the edge pixels. GMD GestureControl on Android uses lets you full define any bezel (or third of a bezel) to execute actions or shortcuts (i.e. "back" or simply "open app X"). Gestures can be even more complicated (up - down - up) or multitouch (you define up 1-5 touch points).

I used to use the full swipe to switch between applications all the time - on Android? On basic Android I had to (horror!) tap twice (so much time wasted on that additional tap). Now?

So I've pretty much baked webOS gestures (on Viagra) into Android.
