I'm a long-term Palm Pre/Pre 2/Touchpad user... and have done my fair share of doctoring, meta-doctoring, alpha/beta kernels etc....

BUT I cannot get past this brick wall that has completely borked my TP.

Trying to make touchplayer work (long story and now irrelevant) I ended up sending the tp into an endless cycle of reboots.

Tried all sorts of things from the forums, but in the end decided to doctor.

    • I'm on a laptop running Windows XP (sadly)
    • Cleared out all old versions of the doctor.
    • Updated to latest Java
    • Downloaded (via my profile) the appropriate 3.04 doctor
    • Set it running, but gets stuck "checking system"

Now, before you say... I've read through every thread I can that mentions this (seemingly well known) problem, but it doesn't matter how many times I delete all traces of the doctor (and its downloader), restart my machine and try again, it still gets stuck at the "checking system".

In the meantime I have a tp that will only exist in two 'states': (1) Dev mode screen or (2) endless reboot.

    Help!!!

    Anyone?

...but having 57 people 'view' this and not a single reply worries me more than a little...

Can anyone suggest something more for me to try?

Can't believe there isn't someone with a 'I had that too and tried this...' suggestion?

    Please?

Run the doctor on the command line, and post the console log.

I've actually managed to get past this stage on another computer, though then the process (when I connected the TP) kept dumping out at 4% (saying the TP had disconnected)...

    Sheesh...

    Help!!!

    Anyone?

"checking system" has nothing to do with your touchpad. It's your XP computer that got stuck. Try another computer AND don't uninstall anything or update anything. If you got it to wok for 3.0.2, it should work with 3.0.4. I think you might have messed up your XP when you did all those updates.

Don't plug your TP to the computer before your computer finishes its system checking (for now). Once you get this issue resolved, it actually does not matter when you should plug in your TP.

Another thing to keep in mind: battery. If your battery is out, you won't see a thing.

OK - yes, I've worked out that it wasn't the TP causing the initial problem - thanks.

Now I am past that and have hit the precise same snag (actually more of a very big brick wall) that I hit a year or two back when trying to meta-doctor my Pre to take 2.1.

The process gets to 4%, then shows "waiting for device to come back up", then nothing...

Watching the console output doesn't help (see below).

I've watched the USB dialog and it shows (as do the windows sounds) that the TP disconnects at 4% (I suspect it's meant to?) then tries to reconnect - but although Windows thinks it has (it's shown in the dialog), the good Doctor thinks it hasn't.

I've tried all sorts of combinations of pulling out the USB cable at different moments, or rebooting the TP (both in and not in dev mode - the latter restarts the whole doctor process from the start).

Completely out of ideas - especially since with my Pre, no-one ever came up with a solution, it just suddenly 'worked' on the nth attempt... so I'll keep trying.

By the way, I'm not the only one to have this problem...

    Help?

I still think that this is not due to the tp quality. You may have problem with your computer, your webos doctor software, java, driver, or usb cable. Do all of the following in tandem:

    1. use a different computer that has never been used to doctor.
    2. download a fresh copy of webos doctor directly from your account. avoid using links from threads for the software (one doctor file was corrupted but i forgot from which link).
    3. use a different usb cable. the one from hp is trash. it breaks without showing any physical damage so it's very hard to tell. use a micro-usb cable from your phone or whatever.
    4. make sure you charge tp to at least 30%.
    5. consider not to use the text mode when doctoring.

After you've done all of the above simultaneously, tell us if you're still having the issue. I don't think it's a tp quality issue.

Here's a list of problems I personally faced and resolved by myself. None of them are related to tp quality:
    a. doctoring stuck due to computer software and needed to change to another computer
    b. doctoring failed due to bad usb cable
    c. corrupted webos doctor software downloaded via a link from a forum thread
    d. constant reboot mode
    e. completely out of power while tp file was corrupted and needed to doctor.
    f. complete wipe/complete off mode
    g. constant reboot mode while charging.
    h. charging did not seem to work.
    i. no response from tp when pressing power key no matter how long i press it
    j. battery drain while in complete wipe/complete off mode
    k. blue screen (be careful on this one, it could be related to conflict on power in usb cable).
    l. big question mark on battery logo
    m. unplugged usb in the middle of doctoring.
    n. tp does not response to normal power+home key (short pressing time)
    o. "complete brick" - no response from power key, power+vol key, power+vol+home key, no response when charger is plugged in
    p. two (yes two) led lights next to the usb port flash alternatively.

Thanks greenskinredeyez - really appreciate your time and attention to detail on this.

I'm sure (at least I hope!) you're right...

It ain't the lead (tried three different ones), but probably is the computer - though I've tried three different laptops (WinXp, Vista and Ubuntu netbook - couldn't get novcom working on the latter)... but by the end of the week I'll have rebuilt my Win7 desktop... so I'll have the chance to try again on a rather more robust system.

    I'll let you know!
