A new 3.0.4 compatible version of this patch can be found here:

    http://forums.precentral.net/3219700-post29.html

Everything below this is outdated old info. Use the new patch.

THIS PATCH IS NOT 3.0.4 COMPATIBLE, DO NOT USE WITH 3.0.4 (it wont break anything, but it will not allow you to apply it). I will update the patch in the next day or so.

Also - my investigations have shown that using Android/Ipad user agents actually breaks more web pages than it improves. This is -not- a worthwhile area of effort at the present time because our webkit browser is too far behind the competition to properly render most tablet-specific net interfaces.

I was fiddling around with my touchpad and I figured I'd toss this out there because someone else might have a use for it.

Warning: This patch works by masquerading as an iPad in the user-agent string. It -WILL- break the app catalog until you uninstall it (much like my hulu patch). Installing and uninstalling this patch takes roughly 1 minute, so bear this in mind. Also, this isn't exactly a "magic bullet". Plenty of ipad-only sites are optimized to a degree that they do not work properly on the touchpad. For example, google docs looks great when you use this patch, but you are unable to edit. YMMV, it's still fun to fiddle around with .

On the upside, it enables the various ipad-optimized sites on the internet, and provides a pretty nice browsing experience on a few of them. Just to list a couple examples, google's direct website is remarkably nicer (in all of it's incarnations - gmail included, although gmail sadly doesn't/scroll correctly) once you install this patch. Another neat change is seen at cbs.com. Watching video there while using this patch ends up opening up in your actual video player as a streaming video, making quality much better without some of the stutters and issues present with the current touchpad's flash video player.

There's a ton of other websites that are just a -bit- nicer when you install this patch.

Allright, you all still with me? Now we change our user agent.

I went ahead and edited an old patch to allow you to easily enable and disable iPad spoofing on webOS version 3.0.2.

Step one: Download the file attached to this post and EXTRACT (unzip) it to an easy to find spot (like your desktop).

Step two: Put this file on your touchpad.

You can either "send" this file (tools > send file) using webosquickinstall to /media/internal
OR you can just plug the touchpad into the computer, put it into USB mode, and drag/drop this UNZIPPED file into it's root directory.

Step three: open a linux command line (tools > linux commandline) in webosquickinstall, OR, you can use xecutah/xterm.

Step four: type this exactly into the terminal window:

    /media/internal/change-user-agent

The device will change the agent and auto-reboot. Be patient, it'll take a minute or two for the device to patch and reboot.

You are now spoofing iPad, when the device boots back up feel free to go visit google.com or gmail.com to confirm.

When you want to uninstall it (so you can use app-catalog again), you simple go back to a linux command line again (in webosquickinstall) and type:

    /media/internal/change-user-agent uninstall

One minute and an automatic reboot later, the app catalog works and everything is back to normal.

You can also, as I've explained above, run these commands from inside the device using xterm (you'll have to install xecutah, xserver, and xterm from preware to do this). You'll still have to move this file to your /media/internal first though - you can do that pretty simply by plugging the touchpad into the computer and going into USB STORAGE mode, then simply copying the change-user-agent file to the root directory (drag and drop, basically).

That's neat, but still quite cumbersome, especially if you don't already have xterm etc installed. A simple app with a checkbox would be great. If only I had any idea how to make one...

Vudu? Not sure - the site itself seems to work perfectly but when I tried a "free" video it went to a spinning circle and eventually lost connection to the site.

You'd have to try it yourself - may work.

Google Music? I'm getting a security error.

Most sites I visit seem to work perfectly, so it's possible these are exceptions to the rule, or possible that it's my touchpad (I've got lots of oddball undocumented tweaks going on here). It might be worthwhile to test it for yourself .

sweet. can't wait to try this when i get home

So browsing is a little nicer because you can now view the iPad optimized versions of the websites? Who would have thought that such sites actually existed and gave the iPad a leg up! Just kidding. Good work! I will try this once I get home. Would be nice to make it into an app. Too bad it breaks the App Catalog. Would be great to have it set all the time so there would be fewer complaints about the browser.

What if we already have the hulu patch installed? do we need to uninstall that first and then install this?

    Thanks

Also, i know u mentioned 3.0.2. But would it work with 3.0.3?

    Thanks again.

Yes, you'd have to uninstall the hulu fix to use this.

This patch would not recognize the user agent the hulu fix uses, and would just kick you back an error saying so .

As I don't have 3.0.3, I haven't bothered with fiddling around with it's user-agent. It's easy enough to do, but I'm not dead certain what the exact user agent string is in the browser settings .so file (and it has to be -exact-).

Just for giggles, I've attached a POTENTIALLY 3.0.3 compatible version of this. Please note - this is untested and may not work.

On the plus side, because of how specific this patch is, it shouldn't do anything but kick an error if it doesn't work. Use this at your own risk, and report back if it works for you .

both the new hulu patch and this ipad spoof patch are named

    "change-user-agent"

can I rename them to something like

    "hulu-user-agent" and "ipad-user-agent" so I don't confuse them?

    Then instead of these directions

    I would type either

    /media/internal/ipad-user-agent

    to install

    and
    /media/internal/hulu-user-agent uninstall
    /media/internal/ipad-user-agent uninstall

    to uninstall

    correct?

iPad specific sites look for "ipad" in the user agent string.

The touchpad identifies itself as a HP touchpad, and thus, doesn't get served the iPad versions of these sites.

Either way, it's more of a novelty than anything else . Unnecessary, but there are quite a few sites that this little patch improves a bit. Feel free to try it out if you like. I don't recommend it for general use but I figured someone would find some use for it. For example, there was a touchpad user who's whole focus on owning the touchpad was watching video at CBS.com (she wanted her "soaps"). This patch would improve things for her. YMMV

Cant think of any reason why that wouldn't work, just remember that you need to uninstall one before using the other.

ncinerate - I went to Gmail and it indeed is formatted MUCH better, but also noticed that the list of emails on the left, nor the email preview pane on the right will not scroll.

I know you made this for fun, but just wanted to confirm this wasn't a "just me" issue.

I'm back on 3.0.2 just so I could play w/some of your patches that 3.0.3 doesn't like.

Nope, you're right, it seems to not allow for scrolling. There must be some kind of ipad specific scrolling sceme incorporated in gmail. No idea what they've done there or why it doesn't work.

Just another example of why this is a "for fun" patch and not something I'd recommend everyone do .
