there are instructions on how to do a root install posted earlier in this thread I will briefly summarize.

copy the ipk to the root of your touchpad using wosqi send file - destination is /
then you need to run these commands from the command line
    cd /
    ipkg -force-depends install /com.telenav.attnavigation_1.0.2-38_armv7.ipk

when it is completed run this from the command line
    rm /com.telenav.attnavigation_1.0.2-38_armv7.ipk
Then exit the root command shell
You'll find the AT&T Navigator icon after you restart the Touchpad
I would recommend using /tmp instead of / to store the ipk while installing it. Filling up / with random ipk files and not deleting them will get people in lots of strife.

Good point, i'll change that. I did note to rm the file in the instructions but we know how that goes .....

We had two top notch unlocking companies, both of which engineered successful Pre/Pixi/Veer/and Pre 3 unlocking mechanisms in the past try unsuccessfully to come up with an unlocking solution for the TP 4G. It's got a completely different radio board inside.
There's a vendor on eBay who sells the unlocked version of the data card used in the TP 4G. He was asking for $129 ea then lowered his price to $89 He has more than 10 available. I'm thinking about purchasing a couple of these. Only drawback is the TP 4G needs to be opened up to swap out the data card. Besides voiding the warranty these things are a PITA to disassemble. On the flip side, they are pretty easy to put back together.
I'm not going to be the one who will be able to provide this (Dogbert would we the one who could do it possibly, I'm just trying to do some initial research to see if it would be worth asking him ), but when it can be put in Diag mode like the phones that would be good first step in finding a solution. Since I don't have a 3/4G one myself I cannot test.

I can just test it on my regular 32GB TP's and there it doesn't work (well programs are there, but the service is not running, so cannot put it in Diag mode), but then again it has a different Doctor. It could be it IS available in the 3G/4G Doctor, but no way for me to test it without buying a very expensive brick (I'm not in the US, so cannot have AT&T cards ).

I don't think it will be that difficult altogether, but all depends on the Diag mode Once you have it in Diag mode it's "pretty straight forward" from what I understood to get something developed that would work It's a matter of running a tool, extracting 1 folder from the file system, but it needs Diag mode to be able to do that

thanks that seemed to have worked great, never would have quite gotten that far without help, pretty sure the data only won't work as when i tried to purchase the subscription it came up as unable to purchase. will try my pre 3s sim to activate it and then try to go back, dumb question is there any way to resize the card to fullscreen on this app ? thanks again for the help highly appreciated.

Yes, I've heard there is. It's a MoJo app, so theres gonna be trade-off's. Twack may have more information. I haven't investigated further.

It's not working on a regular 32GB WiFi TP (I don't have a 3G/4G one currently myself). On a regular TP it gives "Service does not exist: com.palm.usbpassthrough" error.

I wonder if it would work on the 3G/4G versions of the TP?

    How can you test?

    1. Connect USB cable

    2. Go to: "Device Info". Write down your serial number.

3.Then in "Device Info" go to "Custom Applications" and enter #*USBPASS#

    4. It will prompt you for a key to enter, you can calculate it on my website below by entering the serial number (this is Dogbert's Python keygen code converted to Javascript and changed to allow both 12 character phone serial numbers and 10 character Touchpad serial numbers):

HP Palm Veer/Pre (2/3)/Pixi/Touchpad USB Passthrough Keygen

    5. The output of the keygen will be the key you can enter on the USB Passthrough screen

    I'm curious about your results
I tried to enter my 10 digit serial, but nothing comes out in the output box, so I'm guessing the keygen does not work for these 4G things...

What browser are you using? Looks like Firefox and Chrome work fine currently, but IE not (need to fix it I guess ).

If you don't have Firefox or Chrome, you can PM me your serial and I'll PM you the code back.

OK fixed it for IE now as well (forgot to copy my custom trim() function to trim any excess spaces from the input field and caused IE not to work...)

    OK -- I'm now at the USB pass through control screen -- I have 3 options;

    1) Configure UsbNet Passthrough
    2) Run MiniDM application
    3) Configure Carrier Test

    What's next ?

Do you have a Configure USB Passthrough?
If yes, go to that one and see if you have a "USB Port 1" that you can toggle from "None" to "Diag"

Your PC should now recognize some new hardware and ask you for the drivers

Can you post a screen of which devices it recognizes?

My results on a Touchpad 4G:

3.Then in "Device Info" go to "Custom Applications" and enter #*USBPASS#

After doing this, I was brought to the USB Passthrough screen where I did not need to use any key to enter USB Passthrough. Diag mode is called Serial to Net.

EDIT: WAIT - JUST REALIZED, I USED THE SHOW USB MODE ICON PATCH. I HAVE A USB PASSTHROUGH ICON. THIS ICON TRANSFERRED FROM MY PRE 2/3 PROFILE WHEN I FIRST ADDED MY TP 4G. NEVER HAD TO ENTER A KEY ON MY TP 4G!

Thanks for this Looks a little bit different from the version that's available on the phones...

What happens if you put "Serial 2 Net" to "On"? Does your PC start to recognize some new devices? If yes can you post a screen of those too?

One final post (PLEA) then got to get back to work.

SOMEONE PLEASE FIGURE OUT HOW TO PATCH THE "Telephony Interface Layer" ON THE TP4G SO USING THE SIM CARD FOR VOICE AND TEXT/SMS IS POSSIBLE.

From the information I can dig up on the data card, it does support voice/sms.

PLEASE. A LOT OF US WOULD LIKE THIS ONE ...

no new deviced was detected on my Windows 8 laptop, that said, whenever I connect the TP with the USB cable, I get a new device under "Portable Device" (regardless of whether it is in "just Charge" or in USB mode").

on my laptop it shows up with the friendly name of "G:\" (like a drive), and is clearly identified as a webOS-device in the advanced menu. there is no HW ID, but a Compatible ID which is wpdbusenum\fs -- which leads me to believe that windows being windows if setting up some filesystem stuff.

that said there are a ton of interesting options under the miniDM menu option -- attached are some screens -- let me know if you want to see the submenu's as well

Correction -- something new does come up -- I rebooted the TP, and now a new device called RNDIS comes up, no driver is installed, and it sits in the device manager under "other devices"

OK, seems like we're getting somewhere I'm not sure if we can do the same here as with the Pre/Pixi/Veer phones, but next step would be to get the Diag driver working for the TP

Can you get the Hardware-ID's for the new RNDIS device (and any other new devices) from Device Manager?

yep yep -- here you go -- you will notice that I in the mean time managed to get it installed as a Remote NDIS device Internet Sharing Device using the instructions here: USBnet Setup - WebOS Internals and here: My Tether : Tethering for Palm Pre - turn your Palm Pre into 3G WiFi router!.

Once I had that working, I installed executah and xterm/xserver, and using the xterm I can see the usb0 as an interface using ifconfig. as pre-scribed it takes 192.168.0.202/255.255.255.0

I also get the Local Connection 2 on my windows side, and eventhough I configure it as described in the wiki, I have problems getting to the device using putty (I get a connection refused), however the IP layer is clearly up as I can ping the TP from the PC (but not the PC from the TP).

Hmmz, this seems to be different from Diag mode. For getting an unlock we'd need to get it in Diag mode.

According to Research mpt - WebOS Internals it could be that the command: mpt diag

Might work to get it into Diag mode, any chance you could try that?

Any update from HP on when the 3.0.4 AT&T update will be released for the 4G?

In the meantime I have been asked to stay on 3.0.2, as they are promising a real OTA of 3.0.4 for the 4G TP's (which to my ears sounds like a acknowledgement of the fact that they have to support these babies).
