just to get this straight. You need to have developer mode on to install any preware right? And its safer to turn developer mode off when not needed?

You need it on when you install preware through webosQuickInstall. After that you don't need it even when installing apps with preware.

mine was left on, ive been meaning to turn it off but havent. I dont think it matter whether its on or off, but again im not super familiar with webos. Most on here do say from what i have read that leaving it on will cause no damage.

I read somewhere that it leaves security holes open if you leave it on.

From what I've read in other threads like this, developer mode only opens ports for the USB connection. So someone wanting to get at your touchpad's info would have to have physical access to the device, in which case it wouldn't matter if you had dev mode on or off anyway.
