How can I make email app list older messages

I like Using the email app with my gmail but for whatever reason I can only view very recent emails. The inbox only lists emails dated within 1 week. It says 1 week ago but has only 2 emails, under that tab. Is there a way to change a setting so that I can see older emails? It is very annoying even my 1st gen ipod touch lets me view older emails. Is this the same for everyone else, I have not seen anything posted about this issue and find it surprising that is flaw would go unnoticed.

In the email app, bring up the Email menu in the top left corner of the screen, select Preferences and Accounts. Select your email account, under "Sync Criteria" increase the time period for "Show Email", press Done.

I find that my all email only goes back a year but my sent email goes all the way back to 2005. Hmmmm?
