what's the difference between airplane mode and turning off Wi-Fi?

don't they basically do the same thing?

or did HP leave "Airplane Mode' in there for the 4G model?

yes. but airplane mode goes a step further by preventing any apps from turning wi-fi back on. same goes for Bluetooth

okay, that makes sense.... I'm just wondering because I'm flying tomorrow. (first flight
is 5 hours long and the airline website said WiFi is available on this aircraft.... but the
second flight is 14-hours long, so no Wifi )
