The Device Information screen on the Touchpad disagree's with you.

Goto Device Information > More Info

    Middle of the screen:

    Supported Bluetooth profiles:
HPP/HSP, A2DP, AVRCP, OPP, SPP, MAP, HID

So the answer would be yes, SPP is supported (though no app takes advantage of data transfer a this point)!

Ah! Sorry, you are right. I was meaning to say no data could be transferred.

I thought I remembered that starting in webos 2.0 it was supposed to be available.

From webOS 2.0 Review | The #1 HP webOS, TouchPad, Pre, and Veer Community | PreCentral.net

Palm points out the Bluetooth keyboard support isn't important just for keyboards, but also because it offers support for barcode scanners and lock boxes. In the interest of completeness, here are the supported Bluetooth profiles: HFP/HSP, A2DP, PBAP, PAN, AVRCP, OPP, SPP, HID.
    Hands-Free Profile (HFP)
    Headset Profile (HSP)
    Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP)
    Phone Book Access Profile (PBAP)
    Personal Area Networking Profile (PAN)
    Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP)
    Object Push Profile (OPP)
Serial Port Profile ( SPP )
    Human Interface Device Profile (HID)
