After much testing, and with help from several other forum members, I believe we've come up with a HandBrake preset for DVDs that works properly on the Touchpad. Files encoded with this preset should show in the photos and videos app, allow seeking throughout the file, and play at a smooth frame rate.

Once the preset is imported, please check the "Keep Aspect Ratio" box under the Picture tab, as the preset export seems to lose this setting.

This may work with sources other than DVDs, but that's all I've tested it with so far.

I have not verified that files larger than 1.6GB will play, but I did have one 2.1GB file that would not - so the limit is likely somewhere in between.

This preset was created with HandBrake 0.9.5 in Windows.

Good deal! But can you explain how to load this file onto Handbrake? And, once the upload is complete, will this show as a new preset in Handbrake?

After you save the file I attached, rename it from .txt to .plist - then in HandBrake, click on the Presets menu, then choose Import.

Sorry for the extra step, but the forum wouldn't let me upload a .plist file.

Yes, it will show as a new preset with the name Touchpad (Imported).

I"m using handbrake on Linux. I changed the file name and imported it, but the Touchpad does not show up in the Presets window.

Sorry, I only tested on Windows, although I don't see any reason why it shouldn't work on Linux also. Are you running 0.9.5?

Yes, it is version 0.9.5 on Linux Mint Debian Edition. I'm going to try the file under Handbrake on Windows 7.

Your source video must have contained a Spanish audio track. After you choose the source in Handbrake, check the Audio tab to see if there are multiple tracks. If so, you can use another program (possibly VLC) to check and see which track you need to choose. Sorry, but I don't have directions on how to do this, though.

The other option is to recreate the source file and only select the English audio track on the DVD.

Ok, I am pretty ignorant and a noob when it comes to doing more then checking my email and looking at the internet on the computer. I ordered a TouchPad from QVC and it's supposed to arrive on July 20th so I thought I would go about converting some of my DVD collection so that they are ready wen my TouchPad gets in. I downloaded the most recent version of Handvrake but then it said I needed .net Framework v2.0.50727. So I went to microsofts website to look for that. I put that into the search but it didn't give me any results. I decided to just download v4 of .NET framework. Installed that and when I try to run Handbrake it says can't find "runtime". Does anybody have any idea what I need to do to get this working properly? The computer is using Windows XP. TIA.

There is some troubleshooting information that may be helpful at the link below, but if you're not able to get it installed then someone in the Handbrake forums might be able to help.

Thanks, I finally got it installed starts up but when I select the "source" (my kids movies) the scanner keeps going and nothing happens. I looked up the wiki for Handbrake and it says they no longer decrypt copyrighted DVDs and I need different software to do that first and put it on my hard drive and then handbrake can convert to a Touchpad friendly version. Anyone have any suggestions for DVD rippers (preferably freeware) TIA.

Please send your configuration to the Handbrake developers. Hopefully it will be added in the next release. Actually, a Pre 2 version might also be a good idea.

Found the problem and the solution: go to Tools > Options, click on audio and choose your preferred language. without that little selection, i was hearing Harry Potter speak fluent Spanish.

Ah crap... well I converted my movie from iTunes which began life as 851x480 and then Handbrake squashed it down to 638x480. It didn't crop it or anything, it just horizontally compressed it, and now it's very, very distorted.

Is there any way to keep the aspect ratio and just letterbox it on the TouchPad screen?

    Thanks a ton.

See the first post in the thread. There's a box you need to put a check mark in.
