It suddenly occured to me today what is important in a tablet and why some are more successful than others. Some people may have figured this out already, and although I have almost had it before, I've not been able to put it into words until now. So I ask this question to you...

What do you want to use the Touchpad for?

I'm not talking about apps, how easy it is to use, or what it can or can't do. I'm talking about what you want to do with some hardware that hasn't really found it's purpose yet.

    Here's my wants:

    - I want to be able to control the world around me. I want to be able to use the Touchpad to stream my music through my home speakers, and control Windows Media Center on my TV. I want it to be able to control the heating and lights in my house.

    - I want to be able to show content on a larger display. When my friends come round my house, I want to be able to show them a website, youtube clip, or even my photo's on my TV and not have to plug the Thouchpad into the TV to do it. When I go to business meetings I want to be able to connect the Touchpad to their display and show our products.

    - I want to be able to communicate with everyone. I want to have Facebook chat built into Synergy. I want to be able to make calls through Skype, Phone, and SIP all through one application. I want to be able to message or videocall people with other devices such as Blackberrys or IPhones.

    - I want to be able to work from the comfort of my couch. I want Word, Excel, and Powerpoint applications with editing. I want full Outlook functionallity. I want a remote destop application.

If this has been asked somewhere else then please point me there, otherwise please post your wants below. Maybe we can get HP to make a tablet that does exactly what we want it to.

    +1.

While controlling my environment is nice and may come, I am buying this device because its far more convenient than a laptop and once HP makes a webOS phone available on Sprint, I will be able to use it to manage almost all of my communications as well (answer calls, reply to SMS, etc). And hopefully TTS will be incorporated to share app data (syncs the levels of AngryBirds or spreadsheet, once QuickOffice goes legit). It will be my ultimate companion device!

Hmm... maybe I haven't been clear enough. I know a lot of people want to replace their laptop or netbook, but what do you use those devices for? If you could have the ideal portable device, what would it do?

I'm not a social butterfly. So the best i'd be using it for is my occasional e-mail reading, some facebook stalking. Web browsing when too lazy to pull the heavy laptop out. And 99% of the other time, remote controlling my pc.

My use is small, so I won't be getting it at launch. Maybe after things progress but not yet.

I may be a techno nerd, but spending 500-600 on something with minimal use is not my cup of tea.

I travel regularly for work and as such have a lot of down time in places where a full laptop is not convenient to use but a tablet should work out well. Examples of this would be: time riding in rental cars, taxis, and public transport traveling to and from my home, airports, and client locations, time spent waiting for flights in airports (even nicer during delays!), the flights themselves (in-flight internet makes this really nice!), and the time I spend relaxing in my hotel room and don't really want to spend in front of the laptop I have been working on all day.

As I work in a technical field with specialized software requirements I must have a laptop with me no matter what tablet I choose so my tablet choice does not have to do everything my laptop does it just needs to keep me entertained and informed. Email, web browsing, Facebook, Twiiter, kindle reading, games, videos, and music are what I need, the Touchpad can handle all that and webOS can do it so much nicer than any other tablet OS out there.

I like this because it offers a different perspective on my own uses. I want a device to complement my home entertainment system, whereas you want a device that is a portable entertainment system, kind of like a portable DVD player but with more functionallity. Wouldn't you like it to have the same functionallity of your laptop though, even if the software is specialised? Think bigger!

In order to be a viable purchase, I need a tablet that is more portable than my laptop, but can replicate the basic functions (document editing, email and internet access). Without those...especially document editing...buying a tablet is a nonstarter for me.

Everything else is just icing to my electronic cake.

OP: I'm with you on the same points... especially the work part. Full Outlook, plus Office Communicator / Lync integration would be great. But probably the biggest on my wishlist is a remote desktop / remote assistance client.

I would love to have the same functionality on my tablet as on my laptop. It would be great to cut down on the amount of gear I need with me when I travel but today it is just not possible. Right now the only company that is even talking about offering the kind of experience I would need is Microsoft with Windows 8 and I hope it works out for them as that would force the others to compete and competition is generally good at driving innovation.

It is funny you chose DVD player because I have actually traveled with a portable DVD player in the past and as technology has changed I have tried to change with it. I currently own and travel with an iPod touch and a kindle reader which are very nice but I think the added flexibility of a full tablet is even nicer. I have seriously considered buying an iPad or an Android tablet, and actually own a Nook Color which I hacked to allow Android Market access and my girlfriend loves using, but as I have used a webOS phone since launch day I just cannot get passed how terrible the user experience is on those OSís as compared to webOS.
