anyone know if the touchpad will be able to play .avi files natively? and if not, are there any apps out or in the works that would play them?

I know of no apps that would do this. I've always used Handbrake to easily convert them for my Pre which is what I'll also do if I get a TouchPad.

avi is a container. You have to specify the codec. <<deleted by staff>>

The answer to that is no, not natively. I don't know of any third party player that does so.

There's a third party player that was added to the app catalog recently called kalemsoft media player. Apparently it can decode xvid/divx.

I'm not sure if it will be on the touchpad, though.

TouchPad only plays MPEG-4 H.264 videos; however, I'm sure you'll soon see an app that will play other formats. How will it perform? Who know's, it depends on if it's hardware or software accelerated.

VLC on the iPad, before it was pulled, was capable of playing all video formats, but it performed like crap (mainly with HD content) because it was all software rendered.

I'm more interested to know about max video frame size. Anyone know this spec?

My Nook Color has a max video frame size of 640x320 where I basically need to download video formats labeled as formatted for phones, as when i download HD or tablet formats the frame size is too big to play.
    The iPad2 I think I saw on Apples product page having mpg4 at 640x480, h.264 at 720p.

Example go to Revision3.com or other video podcast site and download any mpg4 video from your favorite show and see how well it plays (or if it plays in all sizes). The shows on Revision3 usually have three sizes to choose from, HD, Tablet, Phone.

no xvid no mkv containers stinks as that's my entire 1.5 terabyte collection. And i wouldn't convert them. Hell i already converted lots of them to what they are. But i'm not surprised it doesn't play those formats. stinks though.

This app has been around for a while and is able to play multiple file types. Works well on my Pre plus running 2.1.

I'm LOVING the Kalemsoft app on my Pre-. It is a PDK app so I am expecting that it'll work (in fullscreen) on the Touchpad. I can't wait to test it out. I've been using it to stream DIVX .avi files on my PC over to my phone.

You can see all the specs right on the TouchPad's site:

I wonder if they could add this functionality in a update. Hell... just let us install VLC and I would be a happy camper.

I know it's 2 months old, but I found this using google and figured I'd give it an update.

Kalemesoft can play almost any file now, apparently. I'm gonna test it out once I work up the courage to pay $7 for it. :-\

Yeah it is an old thread. But before you buy it at that price pick it up cheaper directly from their website with faster updates compared to the one in the catalog. The program is worth the money though.

You can use Pavtube Video Converter which can help you convert avi to h.264 mp4, H.264 MP4 is the best format for playback on Hp Touchpad, Hope it can help you.

Do yourself a favor and just pay for Kalemsoft. It does everything and then some. Quit wasting time converting videos on your PC.

First thing I did when I got my TP was purchase kalemsoft. Great app. Highly recommend it.

Kalemsoft DOES work for .avi files among many others, it is currently on sale too and well worth the couple of quid it costs.

I love Kalemsoft too! I watched tons of movies with it and only had a few occasions where it didn't work (movie was playing too quickly or "format" not supported. Avi, mkv all work fine :-)
