It's "instant on" as every suspended device. What do people expect? start a full fledged OS from scratch in miliseconds?

When your screen is off, and you push your power button, it takes 3 minutes to show up?
    No.

Same with tablets. Once they are booted they go into a suspend mode when the screen is off. They aren't booting up every time you hit the power button, they are "resuming".

As with a phone, actually booting the tablet is not something you will do very often anyway.

@nightdevil thanks, still half the time of a pre is still kinda long =\ i was hoping to be under 30 sec.

    It's easy, don't shutdown it

These devices are designed to be always running...

    (P.D. I think I remember I've read it's about one minute)

damn yo~! now thats superfast! if they can do that with a linux kernel, why does webos take forever?
i hope they can push it down to less than 30 sec. i know these things are suposed to be left running all the time, but so are phones, and with webos a daily reset makes a big diff. so who knows =\

but, are you willing to pay x10 for a one second boot time?
they are using a NOR flash and i assume the RAM is battery backed up as well.

all im asking is for a reasonable boot load.. less than 30 sec. but if people had the option of paying extra for a 1 sec boot then why not.... more options dont hurt any one.

My iMac, also based on a Linux/Unix kernal, boots in 15 seconds or so. I assume the iPad does as well...

HP did buy some company that specializes in quick boot technology, correct?
    KA1
    Visor Deluxe->Visor Prism/Digital Link->Treo 650->Treo 700p->Pre->GSM Unlocked Pre 2 (wifi only)->FrankenPre + Touchpad 32 ->+ Touchpad 4G ATT + ATT Pre3 + 64 White Touchpad... bliss.

Reboots, shut downs, and battery pulls are absolute requirements to keep my Pre minus functional. Seems to go in streaks.

your right. I think that's why so many people are concerned! If it worked right we wouldn't need to do it. Hopefully this is the case with the TP.. it works

ijip people around here get really mad when "boot time" is brought up They all know its an issue but somehow convince themselves that its not an issue by confusing "boot time" with "resume time"

Bottom line is, there is some things the Pre family of devices does well. Boot time is not one of them. I noticed the huge difference when I went from my pre to iPhone. And when I went from my PC to Mac.

If people are booting their devices more than maybe once a month, there is a problem....

It's just not something you deal with enough to spend dev time on, imo.

Im intrigued about all these reboots ppl supposedly do, are you talking about self initiated ones like going in and out of DevMode or does your devices crash, or what?

I do a manual reboot once a month or so but since its controlled by me its not a problem. It's annoyoing to wait while it boots up after a crash but counting those occasions could be done with the fingers on my hand. Seriosly, ive had no more than 5 crashes in 20 months of usage.

Sure, it would be nice if it booted faster on those five occasions. Is it because it could happend in case of emergency or why is the boot time such a big deal ie what are you up to when it crashes?
