If only mine was in ipk... conceptulizing only.

    How to Qualify -

Send us an email at TouchPadSDK@palm.com with the subject "HP TouchPad developer promo", and one of our app specialists will work with you to see how you can qualify for this program. The offer is valid while supplies last.

If you have registered and will be attending an upcoming webOS workshop, you can also show us your app for consideration there.

    Basic rules for being considered

    * No purchase is required to participate.

*Must be registered for and present at the event to be eligible.

*If you work with our app specialists to qualify, this offer is valid while supplies last.

*Must be able to show your app in progress to a designated HP webOS representative, in the form of an .ipk file we can load onto and test with an HP TouchPad.

*Whether you are selected to receive an HP TouchPad is based on objective criteria determined by a jury panel designated by HP webOS representatives.

*If selected to receive a TouchPad, there is a limit of one per developer/developer company. The TouchPad will not be transferable to another person and is not exchangeable for cash or any other prizes.

*The TouchPad will be provided with the manufacturer standard warranty and will be shipped to the selected developers after the event when available.

The biggest thing is having something to show. I can provide my business model, but they want an actual working app... bah.... give me a couple of months...

A nice way to stimulate app development
Try diplomacy first. You can always conquer them later...

I'm right there with you.. I'm waiting for the API's to Open. My other app is just a RSS reader that brings medical news to you pertaining to a subject (MS, Cancer, MD, Autisum) things of that nature
In a world of droid, Pre does it better.

Shouldn't we treat this world like the Garden of Eden and avoid the apple at all costs?

Personally, I agree with Derek's stance on this that was on a similar article recently. It should be like RIM did it. If you develop an app, you should get a Touchpad, without this 'submit your app for consideration' crap.

I never really submitted anything I ever did outside of PreCentral because I didn't see the potential. Now that I have an idea backed by official market research, I am excited. One of these days....

Well, I guess this is a good incentive to get me to stop procrastinating. Don't know how good of an app I can make, but I sure will try.

Yeah, exactly. Jumping through hoops is what turns developement away. Right now I am figuring out whether or not my app fits iOS or webOS better. Sure would be nice to have an incentive.

In effect this is more like a contest - if you app is "good" enough (meaning it is something HP likes and wants to promote goodwill to you for - then you will get a touchpad.

Exactly. Free stuff without any requirements is silly. This is what breeds fart apps and soundboards.

I agree. I think that it keeps devs honest.

I agree, otherwise there would be a flood of fart apps & wacky soundboards.

Assuming that they will actually be fairly liberal, it will be exactly like the way that RIM did it. RIM required that you submit the app prior to their deadline - which moved a couple of times, and they reserved the right to deny an app if it wasn't useful or they already had a flood of similar apps. I ported one of my webOS apps and qualified for and received a free Playbook for my efforts.

I think RIM did a better job generating hype for their dev promotion, but I think in the end, it will be roughly equivalent. What's really missing for devs interested in developing for the TouchPad is any sense of a timeline. Will you only get a free TouchPad if you complete and submit it to HP by the release date (which might be as close as June 12 if the Walmart rumors are true)? Or is it only a set number of TouchPads that they are expecting to give away? That might be 100 or it might be 10000 given their vague wording.

Submitted a fully working ready-to-go app. Hope I'll get a TouchPad!

It's Screamager. Here's a vid of the app running on the BlackBerry PlayBook.
