Hello everyone. I've been using a Pre 2 for one year before "moving" to an HP Pre 3, and even though the 2 started lagging when being overloaded with apps that never shattered the quality of the music I was listening to or the videos I was watching. On the contrary, the Pre 3 visually lags almost never, but if I'm listening to music or watching a video while doing something else which requires some more effort, like opening a web page, both audio and video start lagging, causing an extremely annoying "play-pause-play-pause" effect. It freaks me out, this never happened on a less-powerful device like the Pre 2. It also occurs when CPU is overclocked at 1.9, which is its limit, though less frequently.
I doctored to 2.2.4 with a Doctor which wasn't properly for my phone because I couldn't find the correct version corresponding to my serial number (HP says it is invalid and there's nothing in webOS internals) a few months ago. When I did it again to try to solve this problem, lag seemed to be gone, but after reinstalling anything I had before it reappeared. So I tried to uninstall any kind of useful but non necessary app, patch, service: nothing changed. Today I doctored again, this time to 2.2.0, and right after the account restore lag was there. I can't browse the internet or use MojoWhatsup while listening to music without getting horribly annoying lag and skipping. I made any attempt I could think about, this is driving me crazy, it's ruining my webOS experience and I'm thinking of buying another Pre3, but I'm afraid of getting a phone with the same issue.

    Please, please, somebody help me.

The Pre3 has less memory available to it due to the Qualcomm modem firmware taking up a sizable chunk of it

More importantly, there are also process that suck up more io resources. I've watched as the database implementation does this because chatthreader goes nuts... I've been trying to work up a fix for this.
    Did you know:

webOS ran on a Treo 800 during initial development.

While this is not the high-level stuff dkirker is doing you can help the situation by using Preware to install the following patches:

    Muffle System Logging
    Quiet powerd Messages
    Remove Dropped Packet Logging
    System Control Optimization

They won't solve the problem but they can help by minimizing processor use and memory allocation.

Uberkernel should really be another "must have", i just tend to assume everyone runs it these days as default, best mentioning tho on the 0.1% chance someone isnt.

For WebOSLloyd's issue I'd say he's already got uberkernel from his post but yes, as a "must have" list Uberkernel and Govnah are #1 and #2!

Of course I use UbK + Govnah, but isn't there anything I can do to solve this very annoying problem? For now I've just installed the four patches Alan told me to, I have to check if they'll help.

check govnah now n then, it often defaults to a different/stock profile without u realising it, i have modeswitcher force my preferred govnah settings on reboots etc.

out of interest what r u using to view your media when it slows down, and does all video do this or just some formats/codecs/sizes?

ive only had issues with some overly massize resolution vids which i just edited and reduced the video resolution, had no issue with slow/dodgey video after that, luckily i dont often want to slap large vids on the pre3 so the issue rarely occurs enough for me to be bothered with.

Those same slow *** vids i did have issues with on my pre3 btw also struggled/throttled the life out of my lower and higher spec android phones using stock player and mobo player so its not just the pre3 that has had issues with "some" video formats/sizes.

I use the stock music and video players, I play .mp3 with the former and .mp4 (mainly videos downloaded with the corresponding patch avaiable on Preware) with the latter. Actually the music player seems to suffer the lag issue way more than the video player. Also, ringtones for incoming calls use to lag and that's quite ridiculous.

Bump. Please help, I can't stand it, it's so annoying.

How long since you're last doctor? How full is your device ROM? It seriously only has so much RAM. If you have a Pre 2 that you can test using the same scenario I think you'll see what we're talking about. 512 on the Pre 2 vs 384 usable on the Pre 3 are pretty different.

Less than a month, and I don't really know what's a ROM. Do you mean that part of RAM which is always used by the system, reducing the really usable memory? Or maybe the hard disk? In the first case, I don't know where to find such information, maybe in JStop? In the second case, there are only 0,4 GB left out of 8 on my phone.

I did a little research on your issue. *I'm finding that devices which use flash memory (ROM) tend to slow down as they fill up. *Just as a test try freeing up a couple GB and restart. *Let us know how it goes.

I cleaned out 1 GB of space, so now there's 1,4 GB left. I also uninstalled the "faster card animation hyper version" (x4 speed) which speeded up most UI animations, as its name suggests. The issue got a bit less annoying, ringtones don't seem to lag anymore, however "heavy" (?) tasks like, for example, opening and scrolling my contacts list still make music lag a lot. I'm going mad, it's just ridicolous. Such a great phone, but I have to avoid doing something else while listening to music.

Out of curiosity, what music app do you use?

Clearing up stuff on the media partition won't help you here.

You're looking at the limited RAM (~384MB) and the system utilizing swap memory. Music stutters when kswapd0 and mmcqd start using more CPU.
    Did you know:

webOS ran on a Treo 800 during initial development.

    @Alan: The stock one.
@dkirker: You're right... After more time of "testing" after the brief cleaning, actually I have to tell you nothing changed. I'm not an expert, so I don't know what kind of processes you're talking about. How can I prevent "kswapd0" and "mmcqd" from making music lag so much? I can't believe I'm the only one experiencing such an annoying issue...

You might want to check a patch called "Disk Cache Mod" in Preware or maybe an alternative kernel like Uberkernel which might solve your issues?

Copy and save this file on the Pre3 /media/internal/tweak.conf (the usb disk which pops up when you plug it in your computer) then with WebOS Quickinstall open up a root terminal and execute
    Code:
    sysctl -p /media/internal/tweak.conf
This applies the config and you should notice a speed improvement. If not just reboot and it will be gone.

    you are not!

I am listening to music during the day using the stock player and experience that lag as well. As I have no solution at the moment, so I am following this thread with interest.
I use the UberKernel Default but not that patch, so I'll have a look.

    Regards,
