That denotes roaming, that you are not within your carrier's zone...

This happens on all Verizon versions until the PRL is updated...

To update on Verizon use *22891...

To update on Sprint (make sure the showUpdatePRL in systemPref-impostah or sqlite is enabled) then go into phone app preferences and click Update PRL.

Not sure how to update GSM, although I assume that is part of the SIM... Although, it is part of the carrierdb.json file as Herrie points out (on my Veer when I go out of AT&T cell towers reach I do see the roaming indicator).

GSM doesn't need that kind of stuff... It has carrierdb.json with all information. In case it's not there or outdated you'd have to manually add it or enter the settings via the phone app.
