That denotes roaming, that you are not within your carrier's zone...
This happens on all Verizon versions until the PRL is updated... To update on Verizon use *22891... To update on Sprint (make sure the showUpdatePRL in systemPref-impostah or sqlite is enabled) then go into phone app preferences and click Update PRL. Not sure how to update GSM, although I assume that is part of the SIM... Although, it is part of the carrierdb.json file as Herrie points out (on my Veer when I go out of AT&T cell towers reach I do see the roaming indicator). Hope that helps...
