Cheapest Way To Get Data On Pre

I'm going to be getting a Pre 3 soon, and there is something I want to consider before I go for the GSM or CDMA model, and that is which network has the cheapest possible data-only plan. I won't be using it as a daily driver, so only a tiny amount of data will suffice. What is the cheapest option I can pursue?

I haven't really heard of data-only plans, although I'm sure there's one somewhere.

I would go for a GSM because of the flexibility. (is the VZW model even unlockable?)

I do know StraightTalk has a $45/mo. unlimited everything plan, but it's not data-only, nor can i speak from experience.

I'm in the UK and use giffgaff on my unlocked AT&T Pre 3 , £12 a month gets me 250 minutes, unlimited txt messages and unlimited data , can even tether to my Touchpad using freetether :-) Uses the O2 network.

To the OP: you might look at trying to get the Pre 3 put on as a tablet. Various carriers have data only plans for those. I believe Verizon has a SIM based, data only tablet plan. I'm unsure whether you have to have a plan to add a tablet to or if you can just get a tablet plan.

I agree that Straight Talk might be the best bet for US. From what I have read, data is not really unlimited -- maybe 2 gb a month.

Edit: you get get either a T-Mo or ATT sim on ST.

They use SIM over AT&T, you need 850/1900 MHz bands and it gives H+ speeds... They now also sell CDMA phones running over Verizon's network, but you have to buy a ST branded phone to ride that option.

Reports are consistent 2GB+ months get your data use scrutinized. Unless you are a habitual tether abuser there should be no problems.

The AT&T prepaid data plan that I use for my TouchPad is $14.95 for 250mb per month. You could probably just use that sim in a Pre 3 - but I haven't tried it since my Pre 3 is VZW.

Your Vzw Pre 3 has a SIM slot.

I would suspect that a data only SIM should work in a phone so long as the APN is configured. The no Voice/SMS/MMS thing would be in the SIM Provisioning.

You may want to check out Page Plus Cellular (pagepluscellular.com is the official site, there's also some "clearinghouses" that sell their plans). I'm on the $55/mo unlimited talk, unlimited messaging, 2GB data plan. They're a Verizon reseller, and I've had no issues with the services so far, no one has even squawked about tethering through Freetether.

They have a $12/mo plan with 250 minutes, 250 messages, and 10MB data, etc.

Alternatively, Verizon directly has a data-only option for $15/250MB/1wk, or $60/3GB and $90/10GB good for one month each.

Whoa, the Verizon Pre 3 has a SIM slot? That's new; their Pre 2 lacked one. Now I'm interested.

Verizon Pre 3 is supposed to be a "World Phone" and does take a mini-SIM.

So, I have a iPhone 4S as my daily driver right now, and it is on Verizon, as well. Would I just be able to swap the SIM card back and forth between those two phones as I wish?

I am pretty sure you can't use the SIM slot easily/at all for other US carriers. You might be able to use a Vzw SIM... But why? The CDMA data would be faster most likely. Check the frequencies for 2G/3G in the spec sheet I linked above...

Ting (sprint mvno) appears to allow a data only plan. it looks like you can choose how many mins, txts, and data you want separately, like an ala carte menu.

i chose t-mo prepaid for my GSM Pre3. it's $30 for 100 mins, unltd txt and 5GB data.

So, my Galaxy Note 2 will be using a MicroSIM, and since the Pre 3 uses a MiniSIM, I need an adapter. Does anyone know which adapter I should get?

There are so many stories around where an adapter has bent an internal pin in the SIM slot and ruined the phone that I would just get a second SIM of the appropriate size...

Your carrier should be able to sell you one Provisioned for your plan. There would be no problems if you never had both phones on at the same time.

No... They can Provision a new SIM with your current plan and phone # so everything is identical. If you try to run both phones at the same time it would cause conflict, but so long as you only run one phone at a time it is the same as swapping one SIM between two phones.
