HELP Getting Started on New Pre3

New Verizon Pre3 out of the box. Obviously at power up it wants to head to activation. I understand from previous reading that we want to doctor to 2.2.4 first. I have the doctor files and know how to doctor but I don't remember how to get the phone into USB mode without activating it. Simply plugging into USB allows device to charge but does not give the USB/Charge only option, presumably until its activated.

So, how do I doctor the phone without activating it first?

I don't really seem to see a reason to doctor first, and their are some folks that have doctored back from 2.2.4. You may want to check how you like the shipped version vs the many complaints on 2.2.4

i solved the issue of being able to doctor, but it had been my understanding that activating the Pre3 on Verizon required 2.2.4, no? also, wasn't there a battery life fix in 2.2.4?

good time to resolve these issues, tho, cause i haven't activated yet nor installed anything else. The phone will need to charge for 12 hours so i've got time to hear what the group thinks on this verison issue.

I've been running on 2.2.4 for a long time and see incredible battery life. I'm also using the Worthog kernel which gives it a performance boost. I rarely need to reboot. Probably once every few months when the the music player has trouble starting up after I've connected in usb mode.

No clue on the 2.2.4 on VZW for activation. I would think it would activate with whatever it shipped with, but could be wrong.

I run 2.2.4 on my ATT Pre3, and wouldn't doctor back to an older version, but there are complaints from many.

Yes, VZW ships with 2.2.3, it will not connect to the network. You must doctor to 2.2.4 before you can activate it.

You should check if it is already @ 2.2.4. Here is what I did:

1. Enable the dev.mode prior to activation,
a, pick the 'phone icon' during the activation
b, pick 'emergency call' and delete 911 on the dial pad
c, type in '##DEVMODE#' using the dial pad
d, turn devmode 'ON'. It will ask for PW, you should leave it as blank and submit.
It will reboot.
2, After reboot, you can set up you WiFi, disable data access thru dial pad preference.
You can check version # using 'Device Info'-
My vzw pre3 all came with 2.2.4 even though the box said it is @ 2.2.0.

If your system is @ 2.2.4, you should do the following to activate your phone:

3, Install 'impostah' using WOSQI
4, Delete the 'Account' info using 'impostah' ( this will remove 'Dr.Skip First Use')-
5. Use WOSQI to start a novacomm to access the pre3 directly.
6, Within the new terminal, type in the following:
a, cd /var/luna/preferences ( change directory to /...... )
b, rm ran-first-use ( remove file ran..... )
c, pkill LunaSysMgr. ( kill the Luna to restart/re-initiate your activation. )

Since you enabled your WiFi, you will setup your profile thru WiFi.

I did that for my pre2 and pre3 vzw phones. Pixi+ required a bit more work to switch to devmode.
Note that it works for gsm system if you replace the '##' with '#*'.

I tried to grab a doctor for my Pre 3 today and also got an error page. Luckily, I had a copy of it saved on my NAS.

looks like servers are down completely, or the links have changed...

confirmed they are having issues, on IE and FF the Java check is failing when logged into my profile trying to grab a doctor.

Thankfully I've saved all versions I can for my devices. It seems like a hidden danger that they could get yanked and just no longer be available.

This email was very detailed and I hoped that it would solve my problem--namely my Verizon Pre 3 could not get data and thus could not create a WebOS account. However, after going through these steps I get a new failure msg, telling me to go to palm.com/support because Sign-In failed. Any more ideas?

Also, I'm curious--when will my Verizon phone start getting data service from Verizon?
