    Ok, I went ahead and finished my alpha Pre 3 hulu patch....... This is pre 3 specific, so please don't use this patch on a pre 2 (it may work, but lets not muddy the waters).

    I'm having issues uploading it, so I went ahead and tossed it on my box.net account here:
    https://www.box.com/s/ues9s7vio2fyod6kza85

    To install, you need to first put your pre3 into usb storage mode. surf into the drive and make a new directory named:

    hulu

    Now into that directory, you need to unzip the file attached to this post (it has 3 files inside, unzip them into the /media/internal/hulu directory).

    Now terminal into your pre3 either through webOS quick install or xterm.

    Finally, type:

    /media/internal/hulu/hulu install

    to uninstall, do the same thing, and type

    /media/internal/hulu/hulu uninstall

    It should work. The pre3 should have sufficient OOMPH to run HULU through the main hulu site, although you can also watch hulu content through the IMDB website and it is significantly "lighter" so you may find smoother playback there (on the pre2 I have to use IMDB for reasonably smooth playback).

    Since I was the guy who brought this up most recently, I figure I'd be the crash test dummy.

    In short, the patch works fine. Below I'll detail the steps I did to verify the Pre3 was 'clean' before patching and worked fine after patching.

    After getting Hulu to work on my unlocked North American ATT GSM Pre3 using the method described for your FrankenPre 2, I decided to uninstall it to check the patch uploaded in this thread.

    So I followed the instructions in the Pre2 thread, and went back to the stock Flash file. I then rebooted, and verified that Flash was working correctly on Adobe's website, but that Hulu did not work (gave the standard 'not available for your platform' message).

    Then, downloaded the patch listed above in this thread, unzipped it directly into the Pre3 as specified in the instructions, and ran it per instructions, even using Xecutah/Xterm on the Pre3 itself.

    The patch installed correctly (lots of text scroll in the Xterm window) and took about 20 seconds. The phone then rebooted itself, and once it was back on, I went to Adobe's website to check Flash (it still worked), and then went to Hulu to check operation. Worked fine, was watching 'Fringe' about a minute after the phone rebooted.

    Thanks again for all the work.

    Glad to hear it works as directed - I figured it would, just wanted to be sure before I removed the "your pre3 will probably explode" warnings.

    Anyway, pre3 hulu, can't knock it .

    Will installing this patch have any effects like the touchpad, ie screwing up the app catalog?
  7. #7
    It hasn't for me yet. If it does, make sure you know how to uninstall. "/media/internal/hulu/hulu uninstall"

    Indeed, testing seems to indicate "no", but if it does give you issues you can uninstall it very quickly - only takes a minute to go from installed to uninstalled and it'll work flawlessly from there. The way I set up this patch is basically foolproof (better than the older cludged-together touchpad patch I was working with), so you should have no issues whatsoever.

    Can I assume this is for US pre3 owners only? As I am in the U.K. and I'm blocked from the hulu site content. Is there a way to bypass this proxy?

    There's no "good" way to bypass the regional lock.

    On the upside, this patch -used- to open up playback from the bbc iplayer website, and may still do so. I dont have BBC access (much the same way you don't have hulu), so I can't test if this is still the case, but back when I first made the hulu patch there were some chaps from your side of the pond who found the patch to be supremely useful . Worth a peek, at any rate, if your phone doesn't already work on those websites.

    Thanks for the update. It was worth a shot at any rate. Regarding iPlayer is was a ***** when I tried with my Pre+ running os 2.1 as the site always failed to load content. That's been fixed though now i am using a pre3

    Hi OP,

    Does installing this patch have an impact on the performance of the YT app? I ask only bcoz since I installed this patch, my YT app have been very weird. Basically videos now play in the sites embedded player rather than in the pop out video player. I normally wouldn't complain as this is what I was hoping for when HP announced Flash for the phone but my issue is that the quality of the vids are atrocious and control of the player is non-existent. I have since uninstalled the patch which has fixed this issue, I just wanted to see if you or anyone else had a similar issue. Finally, was elements of this patch pulled for the TP as only this and the veer to my knowledge play the embedded YT vids.

    The patch is based completely around the pre3 and has no "touchpad" or "veer" code.

    That said, the things it changes (flash string and user agent) might be the reason it's playing in the embedded player. Sorry to say there isn't much I can do about that .

    I often wonder if something like this patch would help with the web based slingbox player
    HP200LX->Treo270->Treo600->Treo650->Treo680->Centro->iPhone3G->
    Treo680->TreoPro->iPhone3GS->PalmPre->HPPre2->HPVeer 2.2.3->HPPre3

    Unfortunately this patch breaks proper mobile rendering in the browser of many sites (Gmail and Google search hit me hardest). It works great in regards to Hulu but I need Gmail/Search more often so I had to uninstall. (I realize this is likely just a necessary thing to make Hulu stream..this isn't so much a complaint as it is an unfortunate consequence.)

    It seems as though the author has dis appeared and this patch as useful as it is, is no longer available.
    There was never any mention of copyright, so I'll post a link to it here:

    This is really great news! I'm quite impressed that the Pre 3 can even handle Hulu.
