Default WxRad Animated Radar Viewer

This little app shows animated NexRad radar images. The latest update (version 0.1.1) fixes a timing problem when the image takes over a minute to download that would cause the UI to get "wonky".

Download the latest version from the Hombrew Apps Gallery: WxRad

TODO:
  • Find a way to support shrink/zoom pinch gestures.
    • Waiting for Palm to support animated .gifs with the ImageView widget
    • Alternatively load the individual images and cycle them myself
  • Use location services to pick/center the radar intelligently
  • Find a sleep event to hook instead of the timeout kludges being used now
  • Add WunderMap Interactive Radar & Weather Stations : Weather Underground support
  • Possibly add lightning strike data - don't know of any free data source
  • Add support for individual radar sites instead of the mashups
    • This is probably the most requested (and most worthy) requested feature. I'm currently a bit distracted on PreFlight development, but this is next on my list once PreFlight settles down.

There have been many other great suggestions that I haven't listed here.

Fantastic! It works perfectly! Now if we could just get some freakin' RAIN down here in South Texas, I'll be able to track the storms!

Thanks!!!

It's taken directly from the government website (radar.weather.gov), so it's pretty darn current. I have no idea how current accuweather is since I don't use their site.

does Mojo.Event.stageDeactivate let you know that the pre is going to sleep?

The api says that it sends events which will indicate that the application is being minimized. An Mojo.Event.stageActivate event is sent when the application moves back into focus and is maximized. This will allow you to customize your app's behavior around these states.

but I don't know if SLEEP is also indicated.

Nice packaging job, especially the completed appMenu functions! A current weather radar app is certainly on the top of my list of phone tools, and you've got a good start going here.

The best weather radar that I've found on the web so far is the Weather Underground's Wundermap system. You can pass it a longitude and latitude via the URL, and it builds a custom map mashup with radar and various other map/weather layers for that location:

http--www.wunderground.com/wundermap/?lat=35.51747894&lon=-82.06021881&zoom=7

Unfortunately, it doesn't work properly on the Pre, but I pinned their iphone-formatted web site (http--i.wund.com/) to my launcher as my current choice of wx info.....

Nope. You'd think that it would, but it doesn't. I'm already using that event to hide the radar and show the logo when you minimize.

I've confirmed it by SSH'ing into my Pre and running the "top" command while the screen is dark and it's using as much CPU as when the screen is on.

Nice improvements over v. 0.0.1, and thanks for implementing the view rotation so quickly! Looking forward to seeing your further efforts.

(And you're getting a lot more attention now that this is in the Homebrew Apps forum!)
