does the tre650 have to be synced to the pc?

Not really, I guess. If you wish to sync it with a desktop PIM like the Palm Desktop or Outlook, or if you want to keep a restorable backup of your Treo on the desktop, yes, you'll need to HotSync. Otherwise, no.

If you don't, though, make sure you get a decent backup-to-card app; search the forums for the most commonly used ones.

To register apps, your Treo will need a user name; that's usually done via HotSync. ChangeName should take care of that for you.

Almost any app for which you buy a license is going to tie that registration to a HotSync User Name; as far as I know, there's no way to give your Treo a HotSync User Name without performing a HotSync...unless you use an app like ChangeName.

I think you might have to sync at least once in a while. For example, I think the only way to install certain apps is via hotsync...

Then one will just do without those apps.

Although I don't recommend the practice of never performing a Hotsync, I've got to say that as long as one has an effective backup regimen and has assigned a Hotsync name to his device, he really don't have to Hotsync.
