if your phone is GSM yes (I allways forget which US providers use GSM) but you may have tell your provider to turn roaming on or get a prepaid simcard in Italy

With Cingular you can use your Treo in Italy, but you will need to contact Cingular and purchase the World access plan as an addon to your account. There is no contract involved. You just pay a monthly cost for the time you have it activated, but you will be charged in 30 day increments.

However, check the rates for calls in Italy when using Cingular. The charges they cannot quote you are the roaming "connection" charges you will often incur. These can be expensive. You will find it is much less expensive to purchase a prepaid SIM and use that. The SIM will work if your Treo is unlocked. If it isn't, call Cingular to see if they will provide you with the unlock code. They will, if you provide them with the right reasons such as " I go to Europe/Italy often and my company requires me to use local prepaid SIM cards".

The only disadvantage to a prepaid SIM is that you lose the ability to use your home cell number.
