I am trying to find more users interesting in helping me with ideas and suggestions to my design of ScreensOS - a multi-tasking OS for PalmOS.

    http://www.geocities.com/zhamilton1/Aug9.bmp

This is in geocities, so do either copy shortcut or save as...

Tell me your thoughts and ideas, I realy need them to make this OS a reality.

You can find more information at:
    http://www.cliesource.com/forums/for...?s=&forumid=23

Tap My Launcher/OS... there is tons of information there and posts throught most of the design stage.

PLEASE Post either here or there (ClieSource prefered) PLEASE!!!

The reason I have gone out to many forums and posted is because I need more and more users telling me what they think of my design and if they would buy it or what I need to improve.

    Please HELP!!!

Yeah... but I think you should have chosen to word this thread diferently. I think most people are not reading this b/c they think its about the screen rez on the treo or something... Oh well...

I don't think having draggable child windows like on a desktop OS is a good thing on a PDA. what would I possibly need to have on one of those tiny windows (that lool cool, btw,) that wouldn't be better suited as a dedicated screen or as part of the menus?

    I'll fix it later..

Do files get embarrassed when they get unzipped?

This is why no one else has worked on this idea... why would you need small windows on such as small device... that was the same question that was asked in the DOS days... why would you have two applications on the same screen... and look where GUI is today, windows are taken for granted.

I have worked alot on how to implement this on such a small device and I am still at it.

The current design is that windows show information while the menu bar and context menu's (tap and hold) allow to do actions.
By default windows are maximized and they close when you switch to another application just like in PalmOS, however want to copy information from let's say contacts to dates, open them both together and do drag and drop. In a few years users wont understand why this was not done before.

And resolutions are growing on devices, think of ScreensOS on a HiRes+ 320x480 device either landscape or portrait. So much workspace for one application makes applications have to be bloated to use the space otherwise there is alot of white space.

Look at even MacOS, untill version 6 you could only run application at a time (even if in a window) and look at it today, "extreme" had to be made to help window trashing problem.

I realy think that if I can finish this project, you will say "how did they not think about it before?" (:

I applaud your ingenuity, but why on Earth would we want a desktop GUI on a mobile device? Haven't we been down this road before with Windows CE?

I agree with Foo. Drag and drop may help on a 320x480 device, sure, but that's about it. It's the same thing with those OQO devices. The size is nice, but once you pass a certain physical size, UI needs to be thought out again o best fit the platform.

WindowsCE tried to take the desktop platform and shove it into a smaller device. I am not doing that, I am embracing the PalmOS platform by taking ideas from all OS's and integrating them for the device.

For example: ScreensOS does not have scrollbars. Why? Because they are too small for a pen and waste space. What do I use instead? Drag! Drag the pen to the direction you want to scroll (up/left/down/rigth). It shows a sliding animation to show the user that the screen has been scrolled.

How do I do drag and drop? Tap, Hold and Drag. This stops accidental drag and drops and makes it a more usefull feature.

There are many issues I have solved by not copying directly the Desktop parts. for example: ScreensOS has its own virtual layer (OBS - Object Based System) that allows to sort your files/records/data into more than one set of groups (no more category per record). This allows to view the same information in different layouts.

By default all windows are maximized unless they dont need the workspace like utilities. So that means that most of the time you wont even notice the difference however when you need to drag and drop from one application to another you will apreaciate the feature.

However there are many issues I am sure that I have not solved, so if you think of any... PLEASE tell me (:

Secondly, Windows PocketPC 2003 is not such a bad OS. What is bad? It is slow and buggy. Apart from that (I use PocketPC 2002) it is quite a good platform. Although the PalmOS GUI is easier to use, it is outdated and many of you might like that, many of you don't including me. That is what ScreensOS will do, improve the platform not remove its greatness.

So any update on ScreenOS? Will it be released anytime before OS 6 which apparently will integrate multi-tasking/multi-threading into the OS?

I would love to help test it! I think its a cool design and idea and I hope it really takes off! Is there a list where one could sign up for updates on the OS progress?
