carriers don't make money on phones. They carry phones for only 3 reasons. Attract new customers, retain customers, control support costs.

to the extent that pre2 or the next phone from HP can do this better (especially as an exclusive like the iphone or motodroid), they will carry it.

otherwise, they will pass. It's no more complicated than that.

palm just has to offer a phone that doesn't have to be replaced every two or three months, and is easy to support.

They do make money off the sale of the phone. Just like Wal-Mart, Radioshack, Best Buy.

no, they sell them at a subsidized price (below cost) with a 2 year contract.

It's the contracts, not the phones. Unless you pay full price. The phones are the bait for the contracts. A popular phone draws contract customers.
HP has officially ruined it's own platform and kicked webOS loyalists and early TouchPad adopters to the curb. You think after you drop it like a hot potato and mention it made no money and is costing you money, anyone else wants it??? Way to go HP!!

And some people are fools to keep believing their hype. HP has shown they will throw webOS under the bus and people are still having faith in them??? News flash: if it's own company won't stand behind it, it's finished!

    Marketing.

This will make or break the revival of WebOS. HP probably won't have a problem getting carriers to carry future webos hardware if they say they are going to have a big marketing campaign for it. Android was unknown to everyone until Verizon had their huge Droid marketing campaign. Now everyone and their grandma knows what Android is, and that is why it's selling like hot cakes.

If HP is smart, they will do an all out advertising blitz (print, tv, radio, billboard) to get the WebOS name out there.

Agreed. And despite some assertions by others here that Celebrity endorsements don't sell product (uh-huh, yeah), HP has a strong marketing department and big ties to HOT celebs (not has-beens) One only needs to look at the latest HP\Dr. Dre commercials to see it.
