Today I received word that due to production problems with the Color screen the Treo 270 is canceled.

This means there will be no color version of the treo untill HS has found a new supplier. Rumours say that HS is talking to Sony in order to partner with them to get a hi-res hi-color screen.

In order to make up for the lost sales a dramatic price drop on the Treo 180 is expected (rumour says over $100)... So maybe for some this may be a blessing in discuise...

Also there may be a new model treo (210) which will have Palm OS 4.

Next year a Arm based Treo (360?) with Palm OS5 is expected...
    Exciting times just after easter.......

On the other hand - a Sony Screen in a Treo? That rocks!

AND IF THIS IS TRUE: This proves VisorCentral is THE place to go for *Handspring* News!

Hmmm... not to steal your thunder, but where did you hear this? While not inconsistent bonafide reports of Color LCD shortages, I find it hard to believe that the Treo 270 would be canceled.

Actually, you're mostly right about the new Tre0 270, but not about the cancellation.
It will have a 320x480 screen with virtual buttons that are activated by that new laser "virtual" keyboard thing. This way we are treated to the best of all worlds! We'll have the high-res screen, virtual graffiti, OR virtual keyboard! The case has also been redesigned to have a little fold out prop so that the Tre0 can stand on it's own to project the virtual keyboard image on the table top in front of it. It has a built in type 2 SD slot (type 2 is the upcoming SD slot with 16 times the speed of current SD slots, making it fast enough for applications and databases to "run in place" just like real RAM). There will be an optional "sled" style springboard accessory that connects to the SD slot on the bottom so that you can use your old springboard modules. The Sd slot on the bottom replaces the HotSync connector. For this new model, HotSync can be performed via infrared, or a new SD interface cable that slides into the SD slot to provide a connection to the computer. It does, in fact have an ARM processor (206mhz) and Palm OS 5.0. With the added horsepower, Handspring was able to add voice dialing, and hence, voice recording. With the bluetooth headset... wait, I forgot to mention that it has built-in blueto0th chip, so you can also do blueto0th HotSync if you have a blueto0th adapter on your PC (sorry, not Mac compatible yet
    I think that was it.
Keep this all secret, though, please. I was shown this device under STRICT NDA. But I trust you guys not to blow my cover.

    Thanks!

but the next line is "and I feel fine" ... so I guess this wouldn't bother you?

I hate to be a wet blanket but shouldn't an April Fools be relatively harmless rather than kinda malicious like this one? HS is still a small company and this is their big product for the future...

Well, I guess it was April Fools down under since they are on the bottom of the world and across the international date line...

Yes, what lovely pranks await us...

Indeed, I did start my post with 'Today' in Italics... that should have given it away...

It was not intended malicious.. I figured it would be too over the top to be realistic....

How is this malicious in any way, shape, or form? First off, it would require intent. Maybe you missed the 'staff' designation under Mr. kit's name? Surely he wouldn't intend harm toward the company that butters his bread (to a certain degree). Or perhaps you feel that people will believe a moderator of a small website in a single thread that has been confirmed as an April Fool's joke over a company representative working for the corporation in question? God knows I ran out and purchased a sony just because Mr. kit told me that the color treo wasn't coming out as a joke. Malicious would be a doctor telling a new mother her child was stillborn.

How about a little perspective in life? Just because it only happens once doesn't mean it has to suck (possibly the intent of April Fools?).

    I've decided to become enigmatic.

This is a good April fools since it can be beliveable. I think the 270 will die any way. Unless it offers more than a color screen it will be too late. By the time it is it it will have to compete with OS 5, ARM chips, and much more. Also the new Sony Clie and most likely more to come. I am actually surprised Handspring is still in buisness and is planning to make new models. I originally bought a VDX because it was new and exciting. It offered things Palms didn't but the originality is fading. The Neo was neat but nothing special. I will admit the Pro was a good step. The Treo has its own flaws along with Handspring saying they will no longer make just handheld orginizers driving people away. I think the biggest flaw the Treo has is being tied to VoiceStream and Cingular. I have a Verizon phone and most likely would have bough a Treo but didn't want to deal with VoiceStream. They also should make the 270 able to take advantage of the faster cellular networks that are being rolled out that give about 300 kbps so they would have decent web browsing. They also need to work out a good data deal with the cellular providers to make it easier for all the Treo users.

if not for hawkins we wouldn't have palm pilot, h.s., clie, pocket pc or jornada's ... and now once again because of hawkins we now have treo and the slew of other pda/cell copies. notice a trend of playing "follow the leader"?

neither hawkins nor h.s. nor palm will be leaving us anytime soon.
