I have a Visor Platinum and love it.

I was thinking about getting a cell phone, mostly for emergencies.

I think it would be cool to get/send e-mail on the road.

Should I unload my platinum and get a Treo?

What kind of monthly fees would I be looking at? I am not too knowledgeable about cell phones/wireless. I don't know SMS/GSM/GPRS/CDMA.

I don't even know if I can get an answer without providing more info.

Any help would be appreciated, though.

I would say get a free Visorphone even though it has a 1 year commitment. It should be very close to the Treo in operation.
My Treo has more memory than I do.

For your application, a Visorphone is an excellent idea! I was thinking about it myself.

Kensington supposedly makes a keypad in which you can plug the VisorPhone, so you can use it separately. That would make it very portable. You might not get access to the phone numbers in your Visor, but the small size is very appealing esp. if you don't use your phone much. See:
