    Thanks for the info... although, I think this os is different from the Palm OS from Palm, Inc... unless I'm mistaken, which i might be....

    Maybe someone in the know can clarify this....

    ALP is the spiritual successor of Cobalt or Palm OS 6. Technically it can't be called Palm OS as the Palm name is owned by Palm Inc.

    Palm will NEVER use this OS as they are working on their own Palm OS II Nova.

    Will they be forced to eat humble pie?

    With the rate that their stock is falling, I will not be surprised if they did

    Why would Palm want to license a second OS?
  7. #7
    keep people interested perhaps? they do also have WM

    Licensing fees are horribly high.

    Palm might even scrap Nova & use Android instead. IMO, they should use this OS & get back into the game asap.

    I see it's got a HotSync option, including the same symbol. It's also got a desktop software.

    I could see why one would think this was for Palm devices. It sure seems to be.
    * Stuck patches? Partial erase worked for me.
    * Stuck virtual keyboard? Partial erase AND folder deletion worked for me.

    Access (formerly PalmSource) owns Hotsync and the desktop software, ergo the crappy Vista desktop. They are interested only in their competing software and grudgingly give Palm the minimum of what is contractually obligated. If you're expecting to run third-party applications, enjoy the emulator.

    I'll wait on NOVA.

    These are the same tired old screen shots I saw months ago. In fact, this stuff looks like exactly what I have on my Treo 680 right now, but with a fancy new skin. There's nothing new here! The gallery? Got it. Movie player? Got TCMP. Threaded SMS? Got it.

    Until they show a demo video of the OS actually working, I call bullsh!t. There will never be another Palm OS. Neither ALP or Nova will actually exist. I've called this before and I'll reiterate: Palm will announce some new delays with the OS. They've already announced at least one, but we'll see more. Then there will be stories of software people leaving, but Palm won't confirm or deny. Shortly after this, we'll get official news of a "shakeup" in the software division, somebody will resign, and some new people will come into the project to "get it back on track." More delays will follow, followed by the announcement that the whole thing is being scrapped and Windows Mobile will be the Palm platform of choice.

    Frankly, I'd be happy if they'd just go Android at Palm. They can't make a new OS. They don't have the personnel left. All the brightest have left, moved on to a platform with a future. But Palm will drag out this saga over the next 1-2 years, teasing us with bs like this latest re-hash of old pics.

    Sorry folks. It's time to embrace the horror: Windows Mobile is the future for Palm.

    I would be perfectly happy to have the Palm OS that is on my 680 on a similar device, but with the multitasking needed to do 3G gsm and Wifi. (I'm sorry that my 680 doesn't include these radios...)(Can you load a new OS on an old phone? Would this be something for the custom ROM folks? Whatever did happen to Shadowmite?)
    Casio BOSS->Palm Pilot Professional->Palm M500->Treo 600-> Treo 680->Treo Pro (TP) ->HP Veer<->HP TP<->Pre3<>HP TP 4G
    Conn 6H-> Bach 36->Bach 16L (high Bb plays really flat?(fixed thanks to **** Akright))-> New York Bach 6viii
    Scalpel->Scope->Aesop->Hermes->Sidne->Davinci S>Davinci Si

    Precisely. That's really all what many of us folks have been wanting for a long time. Run your good old PIM and Palm apps but have 3G and Wifi.

    Let's hope Palm can deliver the Nova but will it be enough? Is it too little too late? Will developers still support this platform? Too many have jumped ship to WM, Blackberry and the iPhone.

    I think it looks pretty good. The more the merrier.

    Is iMessenger like Blackberry Messenger for Palm or does it simply mean instant Messenger? It seems like the latter, but it would be nice.

    I think its already too late. Nova will be a 1.0 product. It will never live up to all the expectations of the mobile industry. Everyone will complain why it can't do A, B, C, D..... and Z functions.

    My personal theory is that Nova is their leveraging chip to be a target acquisition by another big company (eg. HTC, Google, Nokia, Apple???). I think that's the mission of Elevation Partners. To make Palm attractive enough for a buyout. They already saw the writing on the wall 2 years ago and that's what they're trying to do with palm (making her pretty again ).

    BTW, their stock is below $3 today.

    Good luck with that...

    I would have said HTC needed the name... but last week my niece ask me if I had an HTC. She is not in tech... but HTC is definitely out there now, doing a good job in promoting themselves and their products.

    Google has a "nova" OS already... and google definitely does not need the "Palm" name.

    Nokia, maybe... if cheap enough. Would be a good fit, I guess. (without knowing much about what nokia is doing... know that they are pushing symbian, I do believe.) That would open nokia up to the US cdma market again (I can't remember why they left - or if they have returned).

    Apple... lol... Steve Jobs would rather eat cud. Product excitement left palm with the release of the 500.

    Maybe blockbuster should buy palm. Yes, I'm sure someone at blockbuster would think that is a good fit.

    I agree with your comments on what E Bros are trying to accomplish. Unfortunately, I'm wondering if they will ever see the payday they hoped. A lot rides on Nova and whatever other new products they can release next year... palm needs a flagship "iphone" product. No, not an iphone competitor, but something that moves us (the base) toward palm again....
