    Overview Treo 850v

Well, well, well, what do we have here? I just read over at Boy Genius Report via our sister site WMExperts that BGR has gotten their hands on a Vodafone product roadmap. According to this roadmap, Dieter and I were correct in our predictions about the upcoming Treo 850!
http://www.treocentral.com/images/ad...1199580057.gif From what we see in this slide from the Vodafone product roadmap, there's a Treo, Codenamed "Drucker," that will be replacing the 750v. And take special note at the following specs as you'll see something that we've been asking Palm to put in Treos for a long time; WiFi! Yes! Even better: GPS! Double Yes!
    • Quad-band GSM
    • Windows Mobile 6.1 (Pro? We assume)
    • 320x320 Flush (!) screen (gotta be touch? We assume!)
    • 2mp camera
    • 1500 mAh battery (huge!)
    • GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0
As Dieter mentions in his article, Palm seems to still love Vodafone since Vodafone got the Treo 750 and the Treo 500v first. It looks as if Vodafone will be getting the newest top-tier GSM Treo model first too. That's okay with me. WiFi, GPS, full QWERTY keyboard, a 2 Megapixel camera, 1500mAh battery, GPS, and Bluetooth 2.0 sounds sweet! Plus I'm glad to see that the upcoming Drucker is going to be a GSM phone.

IF THE ABOVE IS TRUE, PALM JUST RAISED MY EXPECTATION LEVEL FOR MY 900p. WiFi and GPS !!

No i agree, although i'm a big fan of Windows Mobile, I know that the Linux POS has a LOT of potential for how a smartphone should operate. I think it can be the BEST mobile OS EVER. So I am also looking forward to it.

I am hoping Ed C. is correct with 18 months -- even though that is 18 months later than I thought it would be. . . . (Lost a $25 Starbucks card on that bet.)

Anyway, I will go with Ed and July 2009.

My 10 year library of Palm applications lives on !!
    (At least it better.)

    Cheers, Perry.

IMO the traditional smartphone market (i.e. not counting iPhone) has been going stale in 2007. I don't even remember one good software came out last year (except a few web2.0 mobile pages) I don't think much will change in 2008. Everyone is waiting for google to show its hands. Palm can afford the delay.

Not defending them, I am just saying objectively.

I'm with Perry. I'm very excited about the possiblities of the 900P. With a similar form factor as our beloved Treos, good keyboard, wi-fi, gps, [B]backward mobility of all our Palm apps, better camera, lots more memory, stable operating system, and of course, a great new OS, Palm could hit it out of the ballpark. But I think it's gotta be in 2009!

A linux Treo will be out in 2009.

And it will not save Palm.

That is a long way off. I suspect WM, Symbian and Apple, along with device makers like HTC, will be much further along. The wiz bang specs of today will be tired by then.

And then there of Android, which many poo-poo, but I would not bet against Google and their gajillion dollars.

This is exciting news, but we don't know what backwards compatibility will mean. I was waiting for a Palm LInux Treo for years, but after I tried a WM device with StyleTap, I saw no reason to continue waiting. Styletap lets you run 90% of Palm apps on WM devices, giving you the best of both worlds. I don't know if the Linux Treo will be able to top 90% compatibility.

And believe me when I say that MOST of the apps I use on my WM device are Palm apps. They're faster and more efficient. The one app that I truly missed was SplashMoney, but that was recently released for WM, so there's really no reason for me to go back to PalmOS.

I don't intend this to sound fan-boyish, but who's to say that the Palm Linux offering will not offer the same technology as what other manufactures are developing for 2009? Palm is certainly losing market share now but that doesn't mean its 2009 products will not be relevant in comparison to whatever may be out at that point.

I hate to even be curious, but I am.... Can you run multiple Palm apps at the same time in WM? And what about integration between them, or enhancements (HiLauncher, etc). What about apps that use external communication, like bluetooth? Specific example; geocaching software GeoNiche, do you think it would work in WM inside StyleTap?

My 680 is doing well, but I'm considering more and more that this road ain't getting paved any more.

    Hmmmm. . . . Sprint CDMA Treo 800w with WM6.1, GPS, WiFi, 256mb, 320x320 screen and StyleTap?

Luke, I feel a tremor in The Force.

^^Heh, the 900p might be here in 2009, but I have a feeling (the same Force??) that I'll be starting a new library this spring with WM software on a 800w...

What's the saying? A 800w in hand is better then two 900p's in the bush...or something like that...
  15. #15
Well if by bush you mean...j/k.

Perry, I have to agree with you, I don't know why, but I hadn't thought of using style tap on the 800w. With those specs, that phone is going to be le creme de le Treo. Shall we reopen the PPR for old times sakes? ;-)

You cannot run multiple Palm apps at the same time, but you can run Palm apps at the same time as other WM apps. I was upset about this at first as well, but then I realized - it's no different than Palm OS. At least with ST, you can run Palm apps at the same time as Win apps.

If you have specific apps in mind, I can try them out. So far, the list of apps that DON'T work is limited, including Chatter, Splash Money (online update feature, viewing records works great).

Even apps like Kinoma and RescoExplorer work fine.

I would settle for an 800p (large Centro) in Q4 2008- that would save me from buying a 755 which has old guts in new packaging...
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe...

Long time ago, when I played with styletap, you can actually run 2 instances of styletap (by renaming the binary) and therefore run 2 POS apps at the same time. Obviously not ideal, and only useful when you have gobs of RAM, but when you have 128 MB ram with 60 MB free its actually quite practicable.
