Here's some info on the case.

You can be "right" and still be wrong. WalMart is just heartless and greedy in this case. I'd rather be dead than work for a company like WalMart! I've seen dogs offer more compassion!
HP has officially ruined it's own platform and kicked webOS loyalists and early TouchPad adopters to the curb. You think after you drop it like a hot potato and mention it made no money and is costing you money, anyone else wants it??? Way to go HP!!

And some people are fools to keep believing their hype. HP has shown they will throw webOS under the bus and people are still having faith in them??? News flash: if it's own company won't stand behind it, it's finished!

it's a cold, hard, ruthless world out there. let this be a reminder to all of us to save and invest our money in both good times and bad. you never know when the rug will be pulled out from under you.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to All!!!

I'm new but I had to chime in here. I work in "Detroit" and my company is contracted by one of the big 3. I know what layoffs are all about.
1st) It is actually very common to release employees right before Christmas. It get's them off the books before the New Year AND allows the employe to build a resume and start a job search during a time that they would normally be off anyway ( Most of the big three are down from Christms through the new year).
2nd) It's business, if your not valuable to your employer. Don't count on anything.

I've been through at least 5 major layoffs with my company. We went from over 130 employees in my department down to about 50 after the first round. Then we ramped back up to about 75 and then another layoff back to 50. This happened about 5 times . I made it through every one of them with out a single problem.

    It happens!

You're crazy if you think any company truly cares about it's employees. Employees are as disposable to them as toliet paper. The last job I had fired me for violating the "no days off allowed during probation" rule (I was in my first 3 months). Yes, I missed three days in a row. Why? I feel down a flight of 20 stairs on my way to work and sprained my shoulder and severely bruised my hip. I still hobbled to work and was doing my job when my supervisor noticed I was in pain. I told her what happened and she ordered me to see the dr. (I was working in medical administration at a medical center). Was x-rayed, diagnosed and put in a sling and given a doctors note saying I was unable to work for the rest of the week. Came back to work the next week and found an ad for my job on the internal bulletin board. Yep-their own doctor said I could not work and they fired me for it. That was the last straw. I said good bye to the corporate rat race and started my own business from home. I make great money and have never been happier.

Well didnt mean to open a can or worms........

Just a couple things to add before I quit posting forever here.

    1) To answer Malatesta, the company's name is GSI Commerce. I have no reason to lie to you or to anyone else here.
    2) To Aprasad, tech support may be in India but if you read my inital post I said the company that Palm uses for customer support and sales. Not technical support.
    3) To the Phone Diva, I dont shop at Walmart. I mean not unless I have to. Ive probably been to walmart 3 times in the last year.
    4) Chimmer, yes it wouldve been better if they waited til the week after Christmas.
    5) TreoTraveller, I do know what it takes to stay in business. My inital point was that it was crummy to lay folks off the Friday before Christmas. My 2nd post got a bit over the top so I quit writing. You obviously love your treo so more power to you and have a great holiday.
    6) RickMG, please note that Palm did not lay these people off. A company Palm contracts did. I didnt mean to "tick" people off here. I used to use Palm as my primary device. And my true colors are I love handhelds/smartphones. I just think Palm is behind the curve when it comes to releasing new product.
    7) Lifes2short in your 2nd post (#17) thank you. I couldnt have said it better myself
    8) Braxx, good for you man! I know that life up there isnt easy right now. I know alot of folks there that were affected by the recent contract re-negotiations. Just know my friend, I still buy American cars. Thats not a knock on foreign cars but I just get a hell of a discount on cars made by the Big 3. Stay strong and Go Wings!!!
    9) SueWalsh, awesome! I hope to follow in your footsteps someday and have to ability to tell the corporate gestapo where to stick it!

Also, dont get so worked up when someone says something about your beloved OS. I loved that the people who run this site recently did their round robin to experiment with other OS's and to get a feel for them. I personally am a WM guy. I just feel that I get the most out of it vs other OS's Ive used. I'm sure most of your have a million things to say about WM and Im sure they're not all good. To some of those comments I would actually agree, and to some just shrug. Whatever, my prefs are not yours and vice versa. My experience goes way back to my first handheld, a Palm IIIx. Anyone remember the good ol' days?

Good Luck to all of you and have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Actually- I guess being laid off before Christmas means at least you can return all your gifts and delicately explain to the kids there will be no presents this year, and maybe no food either. Maybe you can get gifts for them through the Salvation Army and other agencies.

Being laid off after Christmas means you have to pry the presents out of the crying kids hands and exchange them for food, a tougher task.

Either way- it sucks big time!

Here's hoping fewer will have to do either this Christmas!

I for one will say that I took your second post completely the opposite of what I now, rereading it, take it. Yours was a decent explanation of what you meant. Unfortunately, the written word is not always taken the way it was suppossed to be. I was quoting the first part that said you didn't want to stir the pot, so to speak, and then I took the next post as you yourself stirring it. Sorry for the mistake, to you, and to everyone else.

Heh...I'm one of the workers at GSI commerce. It was good while it lasted. My arm (agent relations manager) pulled me aside and told me it came down from big managment, and they were laying off a ton of people. Two people escorted me out...very heartfelt.
    Merry Christmas

Microsoft seems to be doing ok against linux desktop and server.

My guess is you build better products....

But I get your point, google does step on many "small" toes to get where they want to be. In one sense, they are more evil than MS. I've had google step on some of my toes...

Google is in a good position... they gouge mom and pop, small, medium and large business for cash, and pass "free" stuff to consumers so consumers can "search" more.... consumers search more, thus the amount that google wants from the people they gouge goes up.

I've been laid off several times. Even when we were young, we had enough money in savings to make it for 6 months without income. Just in case. As others have said, employees are not valuable; we are disposable. I don't trust anybody anymore, because I've been stabbed in the back several times.

Bottom line is, take care of yourself and be prepared. No one should have to return Christmas presents due to being laid off. You can move here; we only have 2.5% unemployment. Help wanted ads are everywhere.

What about the lawyers who took almost half of the settlement money?

What about the other companys listed in the WSJ article who filed lawsuits to get settlement money for insurance reimbursement?

What about the fact that you can be so tragically maimed but only recieve a little less then a million dollars?

Walmart is not the only villian here. Yet because of their size they are the first to be blamed. They are following the law.

The problem is the law. When you are all not shopping at Walmart speak with you congressmen to outlaw "subrogation".
