Not sure if this is a solution for other Treo users, but I realized I no longer need a Treo with WiFi as I will be getting an Apple iPod Touch. I think Safari on WiFi will be superior to Blazer on EVDO. Also, I think the combo iPod/iTunes does music better than current Treo music solutions (although Kinoma/pTunes/Core/WMP etc are very good, especially when coupled with a large SDHC card). So, perhaps convergence of digital consumer devices is not always the best solution? Just a thought....

I'm not big on convergence--at least not for everything. PIM, email, lite browsing, phone are relatively easy. Gaming, video, laptop replacement etc are more difficult.

I see why people want it, but I generally think something gets sacrificed e.g. a physical keyboard on the iPhone. It just depends on if you care about what gets sacrificed, like say...your battery life, increased size, removal storage.

I like the Touch, but I bet it doesn't do DUN. Does it even have bluetooth. Of course if your phone has WIFI you could probably set up an ad hoc network and connect through there...

I am still not fond of having 2 devices to do that. If only Palm got off their asses and made something different, yet productive.

I was expecting BT, I was surprised they omitted it. I had wanted it for DUN but A2DP and file transfer would have been neat too. Bah! I thought I'd get one to replace my 1G Nano but now I'm thinking I'll just keep it.

I'm right there with you.. No way I'm carrying a PDA and a iPod Touch. That just defeats the purpose.

I find also convergence is overrated..soon we'll want to bathe, crap AND eat in the same portable potty cubicle!

Seriously - I like the iPod Touch EXCEPT the size...been meaning to upgrade my now-dead 15 GB iPod..seems the 80 GB classic is the best buy...BUT if the hacking community can open up the Touch --> eBooks, apps galore w/o the crappy phone!

Who's gonna be the first to develop all the Pim Apps for the touch, and games... Hey it's the return of the newton!!

Its too bad that the iPhone is exclusive to such a crappy network as AT&T. If it was released with Sprint, I would've dumped my Treo already.

The Treo has no innovation and each device looks the same and has nearly the same specs, just different model number.

    Actually, this cuts both ways.

If only Apple could make a decent iPhone that did all my (insert preferred WM device here) can do*, I wouldn't have to write-off the iPhone so quickly.

Apple only makes a great converged device if you don't need half of what WM can do.

That's kind of my point though: "converged" is a relative term. I have yet to see any device out there does everything well. You always sacrifice something.

    * By this I mean: 3g, games, install programs, Slingbox, Bit torrent, native IM, a2dp, DUN, GPS, audio record, stream radio, all of which the iPhone cannot do & would require a second device.

Sounds like things that most WM5/6 devices can do.

All good points. But there has to be some value in Apple's elegant UI & sleek aluminum/glass product design, as well. I guess it comes down to form or function.

Well, that's a very, very subjective view. Evidently not everyone is going to get an iPod touch, not to mention that the iPod touch most likely won't support every feature your Treo would, such as, say, email, RSS feeds, etc.

I see it the other way: even the iPod, a music playing device, got WiFi before the Treo, a *communications* device, did. That's just ridiculous.

And I think you're selling short the idea of WiFi on the Treo if you're judging it based on Blazer's performance. Blazer is a joke of a browser, and the fact that it's so slow doesn't mean WiFi is useless. I have been in situations where WiFi has been priceless and it will be a big factor in my next purchase decision.

I agree, Apple's UI is very beautiful and fluid.

I might consider a Touch....if it had any kind of reasonable storage. For the price, it's a joke. I couldn't begin to put my music and even a few videos on it. And the new classic has, what, five times the storage space? And I'm sure Jobs will drop the price $200 in a month. If I had jumped on an iPhone on opening day, I would be so pissed right now....face it....Apple is not much better than Palm at really taking care of their customers.

Yeah, I think my next iPod (I'm still using an old 3G 30GB version) will either be a 3G Nano or the Touch. But the Touch may be too big, not especially poketable (big touch screens can be a liability too), and I'm not sure what the WiFi capabilities will really bring since I'm sure the iPod has it's rectum closed a lot tighter than the iPhone in regard to third party apps.

The real stinker of all of this is that I can't get my hands on either of them to be sure I want either. Nano's aren't expected at stores until the weekend and the Touch is due by end of the month!? Egads. I might forget the Touch even exists by then...

Why do people keep equating WiFi with internet use? Internet has nothing to do with what I want WiFi for. Yes, blazer sucks and faster download speeds wouldn't really help for web browsing. But WiFi opens up your LAN to your handheld, which is very desirable for me. It's about networking, not web browsing.

Well, I think this is squarely in the territory of YMMV, honestly. I don't think of the WiFi capability as a network services enablement in general because Apple clearly has no intent for the device to be used that way, offers no SDK, etc. I agree it's short-sighted. I agree that the platform could be used for so many more interesting things. But the product positioning and marketing makes it clear they choose not to tout the iPod Touch as the Foleo Tablet.
