I seemed to be having some issues with FastMail and Chatter the last few days. Usually, it's rock solid. I hope things get fixed soon.

    Okay found this

    server3 down again
October 27th, 2006 1:27 pm GMT (click to see in your timezone)
Server3 crashed again. We’re going to have to take it down over the weekend for a full cleanup, but we’re hoping it keeps running through the US day.

Update: The server is too unstable and crashed again. We’re taking it offline and doing a full clean and then moving users off.

The good news: We were already in the process of moving users off this server, so there’s not too many left on there
The bad news: We have to fsck the volume first before we can start moving users which will take a day
The good news: Once we’ve moved these users, all users will be on replicated storage
The bad news: After the fsck, it will probably take another day or two to move the remaining users
The good news: It’s very likely that everything will be fixed and restored and moved by the end of the weekend

Affected paying users will be compensated for the downtime. We’ll post updates as we have more information.

Looks like we need to kick our heels up and practice text messaging. Alternatively you can tread the thin line and use the corporate email server as well. It does suck, but this is by far the longest fastmail outage I've experienced in my 2 years as a customer. They have been straightforward and hopefully the servers will be back up before the end of the day, even though they said expect 1 day. No hosted mail service is perfect and fastmail has consistently provided me with excellent service and 99%+ uptime.

It's been down a lot recently. Not just speaking from experience but also from their status blog.

But you are correct, no service is perfect. At the time I signed up for Fastmail, it was the model of consistency. People are making recommendations for what is better TODAY. But the consistent performer of October 2006 may be the beleagured Fastmail of November 2007.

You are 100% right skfny. And in retrospect, perhaps I went too easy on the fastmail folks. In this day and age they should redundant server support so if 1 drive goes down, the other starts working immediately and there is no user downtime. I know that at my office we changed are mail server setup so that we have 2 redundant drive in 1 server (using the same power supply) and a 3rd redundant drive in a different server (with a unique power supply). The only time we have experience email downtime is when ML halted our acct once due to a wild spamming incident (aimed at us).

So when I say FM has a decent track record over the last 2 yrs, I think I'm correct. But it should also be noted that FM has had a number of issues with users over the past 6 months and it does appear as if the overall quality of service is going downhill.

I don't want to make excuses for them because I agree the past 6 months or so has made their service extremely unreliable. However, I think they had good intentions with upgrades that should have provided much more uptime and made a poor decision with they type of equipment they purchased.

They indicate when this latest incident is resolved then everyone will be on replicated servers. I must be one of the people already moved over because I have not been affected by the outage, but I feel for those of you that have.

My wife's account is not affected, but my account is.

Look through their status blog - "server 3" has been acting up going as far back as August (maybe further but I stopped going back). And on at least one occassion they promised they will take steps to assure that service does not go down. Two months later, here we are. This doesn't look like it "just happened", and for that, Fastmail should be ashamed of themselves.

I agree totally. At least they said they'll compensate affected users - we'll see what that means.

Still no luck with server 3 - it looks as if we may need to wait until Wed of this coming week. A 5 day server crash in this day and age is totally unacceptable. There was no redundancy on Server 3, which is ridiculous.

    Yep.. I agree

I am looking for another e-mail server to use as my forwarded e-mail for chatter mail.
Sucks that I was/am not using just the free service with fastmail.fm.

Someone recommended Fuse Mail in another thread. I haven't used them, just passing this on. But the site is very professional IMO.

HP has officially ruined it's own platform and kicked webOS loyalists and early TouchPad adopters to the curb. You think after you drop it like a hot potato and mention it made no money and is costing you money, anyone else wants it??? Way to go HP!!

And some people are fools to keep believing their hype. HP has shown they will throw webOS under the bus and people are still having faith in them??? News flash: if it's own company won't stand behind it, it's finished!

I guess I am on one of the fastmail servers that is not having any problems. I know a few weeks ago there were some glitches with the spam filters, but I have not had any problems with them other then that. I tried out fusemail before I went to fastmail and while it looked clean and professional, I had problems with it pulling the mail from my hotmail account. I don't have those problems with fastmail.

I've used fusemail all day today and decided to switch from FM. The site is more professional and the webmail is much better than FM. The IMAP service works flawlessly so far, and I've had 4 email exchanges with a tech support person today (Sunday) which just blew me away. They are based in Kansas as well (vs Australia for FM). I highly recommend fusemail as a replacement to FM. Also cost - $20 for lowest personal service package with 350 mb of storage

Fastmail was finally up for me this AM. I just completed moving 300mg of messages from the FM servers to my home computer. I can never be without email access for 3 days ever again. Hello Fusemail!
