It seems to me that the power of a smart phone would be to
easily do "stuff" other than talking on the phone when you're
talking on the phone. Like taking notes, or using the calculator
or looking over e-mail related to the conversation.

Why is it that when I try to do this, I often hangup or get
    otherwise disconnected?

Anyone else have this problem? What am I supposed to do
to allow me to easily context switch during a call without
losing the call? What am I missing? A brain?

    TIA!

I do this all the time w/o problems.

The only reason I hang up when I'm talking:

    1) I'm in another app and I press the red button to turn off the screen... ooops... just hanged up on mom!

    2) Wearing the headset. I use headset control, so I can use the button on the headset to control the volume when I'm listening to music. Sometimes I think I can adjust the volume with the button. ooops... just hanged up on the boss.

I of course do take the occational note when I'm on the phone, but I've found the most valuable feature is to be able to play a game while listening in on a boring call.

Yeah, I do that way too often. But it's my fault, not the Treo's. You think I'd learn.

Is there a witty PEBKAC-like acronym for cellphone users?

Maybe it is operator error but I have the same problem....what I read was that you can go to speakerphone option from the phone and then use the other functions on the treo. I have done this successfully a couple of times. Hope that helps.
