First part is my story that lead to the idea, second is the idea, feel free to skip to the idea if stories aren't your thing.

So I was shopping at Nordstromís today and I was trying on a sport coat and to check the fit I had to take my phone off my belt. So I set it down on top of one of those round hanging things while I looked in the mirror (a few feet away). When I went back about a minute later my phone (but not my expensive sunglasses) was gone....while so I figured that one of the sales people had thought it left behind so I went up and asked the guy and he said "nope, I saw it sitting there but figured it was someones so I didn't pick it up." So now I'm slightly freaking out, so I grab another cell phone and quick call myself. As I was quickly walking I noticed this large gentleman walking really fast for the door. So as I'm sprinting toward him I could hear my ringer getting louder and louder. I caught him as he was leaving the store and could hear my phone in his GI Joe cargo shorts pocket. I said hey did you find a phone? He goes oh, this thing? as he pulls it outta his pocket. He said geez you shouldn't leave things like this layin around, I found it and didn't know who's it was. I said well ya know you could have dropped if off at the desk if you were so sure it was lost, and you sure were making for the door quick. Well he then goes "I think you should give me a reward " I couldn't believe this man who just tried to steal my phone, was too stupid to turn it off or move the switch on top to vibrate (I got lucky), because I know he took it out and looked at it as it was in the case backward. So I took my phone outta his hand and just walked away. Well after a few minutes he came back inside and finished shopping, and every time I looked up he was staring at me.

Well this all lead me to wonder, I have butler, and could have locked the phone up, but what about the ability to send the phone into like "ALERT" mode, where it makes the loudest noise possible, no matter if the switch is sound or vibrate, when you text it a special message. I would totally pay for this, as I was only sure he had my phone and he only gave it up cuz it was ringing in his pocket. Do you think this is possible, maybe see if we can get this added into butler

Wow, heckuva story. You sure got lucky with the ringer.

I agree with the alert idea, but I'd hope a developer other than Butler's takes it on (only because I had to give up Butler a couple weeks ago after it constantly killing my prefs on the 650 and 700).

Yeah, I agree. A separate topic should be made in the Developer subforum about a "Remote Stolen Phone Alerter."

that response (about the reward) kind of reminds of of that stolen Blackberry site..

But to answer your question, yes that would be a good idea indeed

I think you could do this with CallFilter. Just setup a filter with a certain keyword, have it SMS as normal, and create the .mp3/.wav sound you want it to play, and select it under ringtones. You can also have it lock the phone.

You can not override the "mute" switch on top of the Treo.

Good job and quick thinking on getting your Treo back. Fortunately, the old addage that most crooks aren't that bright held up in this case.

It's unbelievable that he asked for a reward! You should have started snapping his picture and told him you'd give the reward and his picture to the police and he could pick it up there.

I've begun setting Warden to auto lock after 30 minutes (for the times I forget to enable it). May not have an alarm feature, but it would keep phone numbers, addresses, and personal info out of their hands.

I wouldn't want an alarm feature for a couple of reasons: either I would set it off "accidentally" at least once a day; or I'd install an app that conflicts with it and the alarm would go off at the movies or when I was sound asleep.

If I'm away from home and my desk at work, My Treo is either in my hand or my pocket. I never put it down anywhere.

Thats a excellent idea, they will probably not know what to do with it and put it down / drop it some where. Only thing is you got to be quick at seeing thats its gone for it to work.

I, too, keep my gadgets close at all time! Its either in its cradle on my home desk, in the cradle at work, in my hand / pocket.

That was some story. However I read somewhere on the net that there was a program that you can send an SMS to the phone & it would lock it up with a security code. I know that wouldnt help in finding the phone, as in your case, but @ least it would keep your information locked & secure & @ least fine your phone may be gone but you know that the person who took wont have your personal info. If anyone knows of that program which Im talking about feel free to chime in.

Both Butler and mSafe offer the remote lock function.

Though I use both Butler and mSafe, I prefer mSafe as it does one thing and one thing only...lock or wipe.

Butler is a great app, but this feature was added after I purchased mSafe. It's all subjective, any wipe/lock program is better than none.

    Cheers!

I think Warden matches this profile much better.
Check Warden demo to get more out of it.
