Does anyone know if the 700 W and P are the same hardware (except screen size), just with different OS?

    [SUMMARY EDIT]

    Question 1:
Is it possible to copy the complete ROM off of a treo?

If yes, then why didnt anyone that had a 700p to test do this and post it?

    Question 2:
Assuming you had both WM5 and POS, and the only difference is the screen size, 240x240 screen that the 700w has vs. 320x320 for the 700p, then maybe someone will figure out how to make WM5 see the bigger screen size, we could buy the 700p and drop the WM5 ROM on it.

    Question 3:
Does anyone know if unlocking/de-branding the 700 is being worked on?

I know people are working on a hack for the memory...

It should be - hence no need for FCC filing, also the same accessories should work.
    Newton 120 > PalmPilot Pro > Palm III > Visor Deluxe > Visor Prism > Treo 90 > Treo 600 (Sprint) > Treo 700p (Verizon)
    ----------------------------Nokia 5160------------------> Motorola V8160 ^

    Except the screen. Alegedly.

(Please do not thank me - I find it scary)

So you could load up the palm OS on a 700w and WM5 on a 700p...

Assuming you had both WM5 and POS, would it be possible?

Is it possible to copy the complete ROM off of a treo?

If yes, then why has nobody that 'has' a 700p done this and posted it?

Everyone here could buy a 700w, load the ROM and have a 700p before anyone else.

If the only difference is the screen size, 240x240 screen that the 700w has vs. 320x320 for the 700p, then maybe someone will figure out how to make WM5 see the bigger screen size, we could buy the 700p and drop the WM5 ROM on it.

Well one thing is that it would be locked to the Verizon network and I think most POS CDMA users are Sprint customers. The other is the physically different 240 x 240 screen is one of the major reasons to stay with POS. Also, to my recollection there are some KB differences. Finally, who do you go to w/ warranty claims ? I am missing some I am sure but getting dragged away from PC.

    Yes.

Just thought I'd answer the thread title question after reading the rest f the thread.
Remember, the "P" in PDA stands for personal.
If it works for you, it is "P"erfect.

If something goes wrong, in most cases you would just upload the correct ROM for the phone and send it back in for warranty claims. When you get your new/replaced phone, upload the hacked ROM and rock on...

I have done this with many Motorola cell phones...

To my recollection Palm put in a 240 x 240 LCD screen because WM5 does not support 320 X 320. So putting an OS in which supports 320 x 320 won't chnage the physical characteristics of the screen. As an analogy, if you have a monitor on ya desktop which is 1024 x 768, adding support in the OS for 1600 x 1200 in Windows isn't going to actually accomplish anything cause ya screen doesn't have that many pixels.

If you create a brick and no longer have access to the ROM, how ya gonna replace it ?

I want to load WM5 on the Treo 700p with the 320x320 screen.

    Windows Mobile 5
    240 x 240 fully suported
    320 x 320 not supported --> (yet)
    480 x 480 fully suported

    "...
240x320. That has the best application compatibility, but requires either making a larger device or a harder-to-read screen.

240x240. That makes the screen more readable, but has worse application compatibility, requires more scrolling and appears worse to users comparing them to 240x320 and 320x320 devices.

480x480. This sounds better to consumers and allows more detailed text and images, but costs more and probably still has the compatibility issues that 240x240 does.

480x640. This would make users happy (spec-wise), but would obviously cost the most.

I think pillar-boxed 320x320 would have been a happy medium. Vendors could claim better resolution, programmers would have better compatability and users would have workarounds if they found the smaller horizontal area too small..."

"Windows Mobile can switch screen res. very easily. The issue is purely third-party app compatibility."

If you can not get it into bootloader mode and test point does not work, they can't eather...
Worst case, drop it in water, say oops, and get it replaced.

I think the biggest problem may be that the bootloader might be different and the current ROM tools won't work. Palm neutered shadow's ROM tool once...he fixed it but they are known to try and keep people from getting in there. That said, supposedly shadow has the ROM and is dissecting it...so someone did in (supposedly) in fact grab the ROM already.

Now as to why these other people didn't...could be my original point and you need a shadow type of guy to crack into the new one to get it off. Not sure. What I do find very interesting is shadow has been awfully friggin quiet and his discussion board is pretty stale. For someone out in front of this thing...where is he and why no news from the master?
